I just feel sick and helpless! What will happen to all the dogs and cats (and rabbits, etc.) that find a new home through them? I didn't even know this was a possibility! It was a Municipal Council decision, apparently. They're not going to sell dog tags, either - saying people can find another way to locate lost pets! This news comes at the end of a very upsetting week. I feel like I need to help somehow but maybe it's too late!

Chatham kent? I think it is bull that these services are run on the municipal level.
I did not read the article in the paper, but I will assume that it is the same as my area, brant, where the city gives so much for cleaning up the road kill, and then uses the dog license fees to run the local shelter.
it is disgusting.
honestly, I did not pay my licensing fee this year. It costs me $40 and then when there is an issue, they do not deal with it. Last year I reported raccoons that looked sick, they ended up dying at the side of the road and sat for days before they were cleaned up.
i would prefer to spend my money feeding strays in the neighbourhood and then taking the sick ones I can help to the vets.Love like crazy everyday and smile.

I am going to assume that there are several rescue facilities in and around your area, as that's usually the norm in larger areas, so hopefully they will be able to fill the void. I think it's horrible that the municipal thinks that little of animals, what are we coming too? When they have the money from pet tags, do they feel they don't need the OSPCA? I don't understand that. So, hopefully those rescue facilities will pick up the slack when the shelter closes. I have Marley micro chipped, tattooed and also she has a dog license, and it will be the same for Maggie when she gets old enough to have this done. Any vet or rescue agency that locates an animal, typically scans them for the chip to return them home safely. I always thought this it was expensive to get an animal micro chipped, but when I had it done (Marley was about 3 months old), it was only $25. I'm going to get Maggie done down here in Texas before we leave if I can. Micro chipping can be scanned in Canada, USA and Mexico (could you imagine if your pet somehow traveled that far from home), and I'm so thankful that this is available to all of us. I hope and pray that people donate to your local rescue shelters now, as they are going to need it with the municipality being....for lack of a better word CHEAP and non caring of our precious pets!!!
We all need a little sunshine every now and then
