Turns out there are a lot of providers @ http://www.gonevoip.ca/ (I'm thinking on going with voip.com, @ $5 pr/mnth can't go wrong)

I have been using VBUZZER for the past 4 years. $50 per year just pay for long distance usage or use a calling card

Indeed you may switch Bell.. that's what my dad did! We are switching Rogers, in process and I'm not looking back.
My dad uses Phone Power provider (I'm switching to voip.com) listed on that site and no complains; he has free Canada and US calling with some International minutes included with a number of other features, that to tell the true don't really use (well except the Android app, which really was handy when we all were in Florida a couple of months ago)Last edited by leonidas; Tue, Mar 12th, 2013 at 07:47 PM.

I don't know VBUZZER at all, but I did signed up for localphone for long distance as we have my wife's family overseas and they have best rate and call quality has been great.. and did make good use of the extra $5 top-up http://www.gonevoip.ca/exclusive-localphone-5-coupon/

Fongo Home Phone is the best imo.
http://www.fongo.com/
It's $59 one time (for the hardware) then only $4.95 per month, plus it includes support. There is also free phone line, run by the same company, which is just a $50 one time fee, but that doesn't include hardware or any support. Considering how much you save vs a regular phone line, the $4.95 is totally worth it for the support I think. You can port your regular landline number to either of them also, so that's sweet.

I think someone had told me or read it somewhere these services are not as reliable - I can attest as I had used free phoneline for a while and then Dell VOICE which morphed into Fongo (or was Fongo all the time I really don't know) Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it when it worked but for my home I wanted something reliable - ultimately voip.com was too hard to resist. As cheap and full of features. So far testing with the new temporary number is working great. Supposed to port our number within 3 weeks, in the meantime we are enjoying Free International calling minutes - well at least my wife is, and if she's happy I'm too

I use www.acanaca.com $9.95/month only if you pay for 12months==$134.92 for unlimited US/Canada never get a bill just a 1x yr charge to CC, plus buy a modem (from them or like me from Canada Computers)
there is also ca.ooma.com you can buy it at bestbuy or futureshop and I have heard it is very good as well

At one point I had thought of switching internet to acanac but someone had advised me against. I think I rather keep the services separated, and having a provider that is the best on each. It's good if acanac turned around now - though as for their VOIP http://www.gonevoip.ca/acanac-residential-review I think there may be better voip exclusive provider. Btw, acanac is $19.95.

like I said before the phone is $9.95 ONLY if you pay for 12 months (all in advance)==$134.92, you don't have to have their internet in order to get it for $9.95.
If you do get their internet then the home phone is free.
I only went with acanac after talking to my 2 coworkers who had it and so far I've had it for 3yrs and no issues, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a cheaper phone service. But like you said there are many out there to choose from.

Are there any hidden things about voip that we should know about. For instance is this for calling land lines only and there is a service fee if you call mobile numbers? I am with Bell and every couple of months they seem to find a new fee to tack on to your bill. I have had enough, but I don't want to jump into something I know zilch about. I only have the basic plan with bell (no features and no long distance) and I am paying 25/mnth.
