summer is around the corner and everyone is putting their vacation request in

who is entitled to first choice?

    a fulltimer with more senority?

or a partimer with less senority?

we are not a unionized organziation

the fulltimer is always bumping the weeks i want off

at my work its pretty much first come first served, and it makes no difference if you are part time or fulltime or senority. They are very accomodating mind you, and will usually find away as to not deny someone their perfered weeks. If they are really in a bind, they will ask around to see who is willing to give up their time. The part timers usually jump at the chance for more hours anyway.
I think it should be whoever gets their request in first should be entitled, regardless of their position.

Seniority is supposed to be trump card isn't it Frugal50? Sorry you keep getting bumped, I lived that for years and I had over 15 yrs on the job, and could still not snag even 1 week of summer.

at my work its first come first serve
I booked my birthday weekend off in april back in January.
The other full time supervisor (same position as me) also requested that whole week off.
Since I requested it first, I get it off. and she has to work. Doesn't matter that shes been there for 5 years.

It really depends on your workplace if your not unionized. Most are first come, first serve.

Unfortunately, senority means nothing unless you are in a union. I would suggest booking 2014 holidays now for the summer if you always have a hard time getting that time off. Put it in writing and have a supervisor, manager etc sign it so you have it for next year when you need the week off.

usually if your company is not unionized, time off isnt reflected by seniority. It's a first come first serve basis.
At least in my various work experience.

I am only familiar with the union way, thanks for letting me know. No matter how senior you are there always seems to be someone just slightly above you, weather union or not, and summer vacation weeks sure are precious!

seems like the trend in our workplace is also " first come first serve"

we can only book six months in advance no sooner

my collegue and i are NOT competing for the summer months off

instead we are fighting for fall/winter holidays.

they always back up the fulltime senior person first and give them first choice, union or not.

We give full timers priority too, although generally we just work it out among ourselves. If people are the same level/hours then seniority is the basis
That being said, if a part timer asks well in advance and a full timer asks later, they wont be bumped

As a part timer with less seniority, you would be last in line where I work too if the full timer asked at the same time

Its usually first come first serve, unless your in a union. Both ways can be good and bad.

I'm still tryng to work out how my former co-worker managed to get all 3 days between Christmas and New Year off when the rules were

    1) every-one needs to be present for 1 day ( we worked flex-time..start 7.45-9.55, lunch 12.00-2.30, leave 3.55 to 6.30)

    2) number of hours present were irrevalent..

    3) the rules for leave went.. parent of child by age of birth..the parent of the youngest child was bumped to having the best chance of 3 days off, followed by religous convections, followed by partner/family/paid staff being unavailbale to care for child/non parent..

4,5, 6...20 million) favouritism by boss..

I should have missed out on having the whole of Penguinette 1's first Christmas due to a fellow worker needing her 2 days leave for her teen-aged sons since her hubby, extended non-Christian family were unprepared to let her work the one day (min 9.55-12.00.. 2.29-3.55) and she was protected by our boss because SHE WAS A MOTHER...

I went over our boss's head to the unit manager to complain that I had accepted I had to be present and possbly work for a around 4 hours for 1 day while my line-manager wasn;t following the rules in a equally fair way..

Short answer : no Long answer : NOOOOOOOOOOO!

"Summers off" wasn't even a consideration for me in my decision to become a teacher, and for the first several years, I tried filling my summers with university courses because I hated having so much time off... but hearing things like this (and having two kids) makes me realize how lucky I am!

Hope you're able to get your time off, Frugal50!
