I remember seeing it in our papers on someone in Toronto being charged for recycling walking cause anything in those blue bins belongs to the city and the owner.

I recall reading something that once its on the sidewalk edge it becomes city property, but really who cares.
I highly highly highly doubt anyone would get in trouble since most people dont frown upon people picking furniture off from the side of the road. Is grabbing papers from a recycle bin really that different?
    I dont think so.

Grabbing furniture is totally different because you are taking the furniture, flyers & inserts you can going through people's papers to get to the inserts. That is why its illegal in most cities & towns because it has personal information. And once in the blue bin its city property because you semi trust that the city will shred or destroy the papers. Even a simple address cause be used for illegal purposes or a persons full name. That is why I don't do it because going into someones blue box I think its invasion of privacy and I know if I saw someone looking through my blue bins I would call the cops because you have no idea what they are looking at or taking. The homeowner or people in apt building complex don't know you are just looking for inserts they might think you are getting there information. I know its only inserts but they might have other things in there and you don't know. If I want more inserts I usually buy extra newspapers or friends from out east mail them to me.

When I was paying my taxes in person in Stoney Creek near Fruitland I just talked to someone there and she said she gets asked alot and she always tells them you can be charged.

you shouldn't be putting any personal information in the blue bin anyway. if something has your name or address on it, it should be shredded. that's the only way to ensure your privacy is safe.

your entitled to your own opinion, but I just dont see much of a difference between grabbing furniture and grabbing newspapers.
Basically what your saying is that as long as its in a blue box u cant touch it. But what if said papers are in a plastic bag on the curb.

I agree too its something you can't do in the Halifax regional area but it happens often because of bottle deposit. There was an article talking about this years ago in our local paper saying a rise in it but its a $250 fine and if you feel your neighbours or people going through call the cops. I shred everything but I think once in the blue bags - not bins in my area - I tape the bag shut. They belong to the owner or the city.

found an article regarding Binners (people who take from blue bins).

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa...le-071002.html

according to the city manager, this by-law is rarely enforced.

Any personal info should not be put in the recycling bin, you should shred or burn it. Just because it is picked up by the city, doesn't mean your personal info is safe, you don't know the people sorting the items. they could just as easily take your info. JMHO.

I was out on a recycle walk last year to get p&g insert. There were 2 different guys looking for beer bottles. Since then I have seen 2 other guys getting beer bottles also. I have seen people at the beer store who are returning their beer bottles. Bags and bags of bottles. Im sure you have seen them too. My neighbour does not return any of his beer bottles. I talked to one guy who was raiding my neighbours recycling bin and he said he was on welfare and couldnt work. He gets extra money collecting beer bottles. I met him another time and he showed me some ear rings he found. He talked about some nice old antique cups and stuff he sells, radios he picks up. This guy has been doing it for years, has his route all set up as Im sure many beer bottle collectors do. They know which buildings to go to, which areas are on what days. They make a living doing it. This guy takes his bike around. He has run into animals in the bins with lids. Interesting and scary stories he has to tell. Im sure he has never been charged, but I will ask him the next time I see him.

Im sure everyone has looked in their bin and saw a bag you had tied and is now cut open. That is a beer bottle collecting person opening it. I don't see the city charging these guys!!!! Its a whole beer bottle and don't forget wine bottle recycling industry outside at night. Just nobody is looking at them.

In my area of Toronto if you don't want something, but its still good you set it out early. A person puts a sign on it free to good home etc. People come and take it. I have set out a couch sectional. It only lasted on the curb half an hour before someone snatched it up. I set out apartment sized washer and dryer. It lasted an hour on my curb. Metal collectors take bbq's, stoves, fridges etc. Im sure people have seen metal collectors come around too. I don't see the city charging them either. How much does a person get for copper or aluminum by the tonne?

I have only gone on the one recycle walk, its so time consuming for what you get out of it. A person really needs one of those miners hats with the flash lights on it to make any fast progress. My mouth got sore from holding the flash light. Not for me.

Im glad everyone brought up the points about getting charged. It is good info to have. Again this rule is rarely inforced because there are a lot of people making a living from others peoples trash.

i regularly do dumpster walks for coupons, and sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesnt...
i gotta say that i totally disagree with going at night time.... safety first! know your neighborhoods if you're going to go at night, and try to always bring a friend, just in case.
plus going at night time makes it seem sneaky. theres nothing wrong with what you're doing, but people creeping around in back alleys and behind apartment/condo complexes can make people uptight, and you're more likely to get the cops called on you. you wont get arrested, but based on your ciry/town's laws, you may get a fine. and really, having to talk to the cops and have everyone in the neighborhood watching is definately more embarrasing than just having people watch you.

this is one of the reasons i usually go in the daytime.
also, because its alot brighter and you can actually see what you're doing

you cant be worried about what people think of you picking through bins. their opinions of you dont matter, they dont even know your name, and probably wouldnt even recognize you on the street if you were wearing a different outfit.

I've lived in Toronto for 5 years or so and I've never heard that. And even if it was a law, it's never enforced. I see people all the time going through the garbage and recycle bins. What kind of jerk is going to call the cops or the city about someone who obviously needs it more than you. And, its a non-emergency, the person would be gone before anyone showed up to do anything about it. I don't understand why people think it's a big deal - you obviously don't want the crap anymore and it's one less thing for the city to recycle or throw into a landfill.

The old lady that lives in the house next to me actually goes up between peoples houses to look in the bins, ie, she doesn't wait for pick up day when the bins are on the sidewalk. Other than setting my dog off (he barks whenever he hears or sees people outside the house), I don't mind at all. She always puts away our bins for us (and several of the neighbors) after the trucks have been by (I think that's her way of thanking us for letting her go through our bins).
