I get a job at a banking institution, which should mean free banking, right? A month into my employment and I notice over $40 in service charges on my account. No biggie, I'll get them reversed and ask why my account hasn't been converted. My manager says she has to close down the account over night and it will be open in the morning as an employee account. Perfect...
    ..
    ...
Two days later and it is still closed. Now I am informed that only the branch I opened the account at can switch it over. That branch is in a different province. Seems simple enough, we can just fax them over some papers proving my employment and voila -- so you'd think. Another day goes by, my account is still closed and nobody seems to be taking this seriously! The reason I don't just close that account and open a new one is because I have automatic withdraws such as car insurance and direct deposit from other employers going into it, as well as my INCOME TAX RETURN which was supposed to be deposited YESTERDAY. Crap, I forgot about that. Should be fine though, when the money is rejected (since the account is closed) the bank has options with it, so I just informed them that I need this to be redirected to my account and manually deposited when they receive it. The lady at my home branch promised me she would keep an eye out for it and do that for me. It's the least she could do since she is making such a big stink about opening my account as an employee one for me. It would take her literally five minutes to reopen my account.

    The next day...
My account is open again! Finally, not the end of the world. Glad it is over. Except I haven't been reissued my tax return yet..and then I get an email from a different employer asking why my direct deposit was returned to them!!! I specifically told this lady at my home branch that both my tax return and a pay cheque would be going in, I gave her exact amounts and all information she needed so when she received it on her report she should have manually deposited it. So now I'm thinking she didn't deposit my tax return either! It probably got sent back (since that happened before the pay cheque which got sent back). I will have to first call CRA in the morning, and then that bank. SO FRUSTRATING! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! How do people relax in these situations? I may never be able to fall asleep I'm so stressed.

**UPDATE: just as I thought, CRA did send me out a cheque because the money was returned. I hope it comes soon!!!***

How sad for you and as you say frustrating as well. Scary when you are on the inside and rotten things still occur, that is one reason customers become so irate with various companies ( CP for one, lol) because no one has the time to be phoning repeatedly or going to a business in person to get things fixed. I hope your nightmare ends soon.

I moved to ON from BC 10 yrs ago and in my boxes i found an envelope with a statement showing some money in an account i had forgotten about.

i go to the closest branch of the bank where i was now living 4 provinces away and asked to close the account, so i could take the money and run. i had no interest in keeping an account i had forgotten about, especially since the bank i was now with was so much better.

the teller had no clue what to do, and speaks to a higher up. she then returns to the counter and informs me that i need to go to my branch and close the account. i just looked at her and was so stunned by the collaborative ineptness.

I was like "i am not flying to BC just to close an account" she was surprised that i would say such a thing.

it took a few minutes but they took care of it. i found it incredibly silly, and just plain dumb that they would not take it upon themselves to perform a task that was simple, easy and requested by a customer.

op, i can't believe it is 2013 and things are just as bad and ppl are just as ignorant.

    give em heck.

Wow that's horrible. When I worked at a bank years ago, they changed my account to an employee account when I went in to sign my letter of employment. It was literally 2 clicks on the managers computer and it didn't matter that I didn't open my account at that branch.
Hopefully they fix it for you soon!

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a hard time. It's crazy the stupid rules they have. Funny though, when I moved from CIBC (accts opened in NL) to TD (opened in ON), I didn't have any problem at all closing my CIBC accts.

    No not CIBC
They could have closed my accounts at this location, just not switched a current one to an employee one. Since I have direct deposit and withdraw I figured this would be easier! Maybe I was wrong! Oh well.
