Does anyone know why we cannot redeem more than $170 at maximum level?
I know you can sometimes get $200, $210, $220 etc on special redemption promotion days...

But, how cool would it be to walk in and walk out with a PS4 for free??

SDM seems to push their electronics section but you can never redeem enough to get something high end for free.

I got a Wii U for almost free the other day... Was on sale for $199.99, so I used a 20$ coupon and redeemed 170$ of points. Only cost me $9.99 + the taxes. But that was very exceptional.

Imagine if Aeroplan limited your use of miles to Canadian destinations only??

I assume it's probably someone in loss prevention that wanted to limit their losses in case of fraud, but it certainly would kick up this program a few notches if we could do that!

SDM: How about a $250 and a $400 redemption level??

I would be willing to bet that your average Optimum cardholder has MUCH less points than the SC'ers who are big points fans. Maybe offering such high redemption levels would seem too daunting.

With that said, it's probably SDM's way of ensuring they don't give away the farm (your electronics example is good one, these items are often loss leaders and to give them away for free doesn't sound ideal from SDM's perspective).

I love the idea to have higher redemption level too as I'm sure SC'ers have tons of points in there account(s). However, I also believe in the theory that we need to feed the cow in order to milk the cow. If SDM lose $ on the electronic items due to the Optium program, they may cut the the program or further devalue the points. Just my 2 cents.

At Murale, which is owned by SDM, the maximum redemption level at bonus events is $300 for 314,000 points. When you do the math, its not a huge difference.

300 for 314000 is not a great deal at all. Redeeming 95000 3 times is 510 at reg redemption. I would never do the 300 314000 pts.

If we look at the $200 bonus level for 95,000 points (sometimes it's up to $220 - but we'll be conservative in this)
    95000/200 = 475 points per $1

    314000/300 = 1047 points per $1

So you may get more money for your redemption, but your points are worth a lot less.
(Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a long time since I've done this kind of calculation and I can't remember for sure if this is how it's done).

Your calculation is correct. With Murale redemption at the highest level, the points are worth a lot less.

Ah, that makes more sense then.

    95000/200 = 475 points per $1
    134000/300 = 447 points per $1

So it is a slightly better deal, plus you get more money to spend.
If you want to look at the top redemptions at SDM

    95000/210 = 452 points per $1
    95000/220 = 432 points per $1

When I was in line for an xbox one redemption I mentioned this to someone who was also in line; saying 'wouldn't it be nice if there was a higher redemption level.' She told me she had redeemed $170 a couple days before for an expensive item and then returned the product and got money on a giftcard instead of the points returned. Then she used the giftcard after redeeming $170 for the xbox one.

Kind of genius but I don't think I could do that, I'd feel like I was doing something wrong :-S

I wouldn't do that either. It feels kind of dishonest. Plus, they keep track of returns, and I'm sure if she did something like that often she'd raise some suspicion.

Some locations don't take electronics back, and besides, you risk your account being fla gged as a serial returner. You could lose points altogether, as many SC people have seen
