Since the new postage rates came into effect I've received at least four trade envelopes that appear to have excess postage. I weighed them and they seem to have exactly the right amount of postage required IF the "P" (permanent) stamps on the envelope were worth .85 of postage. So, the senders regard the "P" stamp to count for .85 worth of postage when used on an envelope.
Isn't a "P" stamp worth $1 of postage regardless of how much you paid for it? For example, a 49 gram envelope (which requires $1.20 worth of postage) could be mailed with one "P" stamp and two .10 stamps… ?
I've been mailing a lot of envelopes using the "P" stamps like they were worth $1 and have had no problems yet. I just wonder how many people might be using too many stamps.This thread is currently associated with: N/A

I just went onto Canada Posts website as this has me confused.
This is what I found:
So based on the info below, I am taking it that postage for a 30g envie is .85
Maybe if you don't have any stamps at all and just buy a single stamp it will cost $1, but how many couponers who are trading regularly would do that ?
Postal RatesView all rates
Canada
0-30g Permanent (P) stamps $0.85 in booklets and coils | 30-50g $1.20 | 50-100g $1.80
All Permanent stamps have a value of $0.85.
For a $0.63 stamp, add a $0.22 stamp to make-up the postage.
Edit
Sorry, I just realized you were talking about envies over 30g.
I think you must be right about using a P stamp plus 2 x .10 stamps, as it does cost $1 to buy a single stamp.Last edited by dreamcatcher1962; Tue, Jun 10th, 2014 at 06:28 AM.

Pstamps are worth 85c
So u would add to it the difference to make up $1.20 or 1.80
P stamp (85c) x2 +10c =$1.80
$1.00 stamp +p stamp (85c) = $1.85 you over pay 5 c but ive done this when i had pstamps already

Thanks. Well, there's one thing I'm sure of. A lot of people are not putting the right amount of postage on their envies. And maybe I'm one.
Here's another little thing I found on Canada Post's website:
============
Q: I have a $0.63 stamp, what do I do to ensure my letter is not returned?
A: If you placed a $0.63 stamp on a letter weighing up to 30 g, you will need to apply additional $0.22 postage to ensure your items are not returned, for a total value of $0.85.
$0.22 stamps are available for purchase at all postal outlets.
============
So… a 30g envie requires .85 worth of postage on it. Either one "P" stamp... or an assortment of smaller value stamps that add up to .85.
And… "P" stamps used on bigger envies are only worth .85 on that envie. For example, a 200gm envie (requiring $2.95 of postage on it) could be mailed with three "P" stamps (3 X .85) plus four .10 stamps. Am I on the right track?

Okay, thank you. I think the fog is clearing.
But I just gotta ask… if you buy a single "P" stamp and it's worth .85 of postage on the envie, what's the extra .15 you paid for? Tax? Or maybe it's just the extra price you have to pay if you're not buying bulk (booklets or rolls of stamps) in order to help Canada Post cover their costs.

Our office has one of those Canada Post auto-stamp machines, so I have our Admin staff stamp letters for me (which are cheaper than buying stamps). Costs $0.75 each.

Uggh I still don't get it lol. I recently sent a couple of envelopes with old stamps I found in a drawer...
Used 46c x2 + 5c + 1c x3 = $1.00. I'm thinking I paid the right amount? (under 30g)
But if I'm understanding correctly the pstamp you pay 85c for but it's worth the $1 postage *unless* your envelope is over 30g and you have to pay extra, then that pstamps really only counts towards 85c and not the $1 ?
I swear I'm not drunk I just never send mailWishlist & Tradelist: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/413172-...a/#post6553213

I know the feeling. lol Consider this little quote though, from the Canada Post website:
============
============
^^^ So, it suggests that if you're putting an assortment of different value stamps on a 30g (or less) envie then it requires a total of 85 cents worth.
I'll bet there are huge numbers of envelopes with incorrect postage going through the Canada Post system and maybe all the over paid ones balance out with the under paid. So far I've been lucky and all the ones I've mailed have gotten through even though I was using the P stamp like a $1 stamp on the larger envies.
