Yes it is. Most/a lot of companies will give you some product coupons for some feedback good or bad. Problem being is when they all of a sudden get bombarded with hundreds of requests they will not be as generous.

So why did that poster get bombarded with posts saying we shouldn't do that...and this one isn't? (not saying this one SHOULD, but I don't know why one got targeted so-to-speak, and the other didn't)

I agree-- I think any posts where you are emailing a company to request a coupon or FPC without them advertising it can create a lot of trouble..... and change how the company may react in the future..
