We live in Guelph now and hubby got an amazing job downtown Toronto. We don't want to live downtown but his work has incentives for public transit. Now he commutes via Go Train from Guelph but its a long commute and he doesn't sleep much. So on or before March 1st we want to move to the Clarkson - Truscott area. I am familiar with that area - raised in Oakville and aunt lives in Clarkson.
I am looking for any suggestions, thoughts or people who live in that area. Next Wednesday I will taking the go bus to that area to look at the places.

    thanks
    Deb

Glad you mention the GO commute from Guelph-the last three years, Guelph and KW have had service increases and the trains to help commuters from those areas get into and out of Toronto.

I know that Clarkson GO is not a long walk from Winston Churchill Blvd, the border between Oakville and Mississauga.
Halton District School Board's The Centre for Skills Development and Training has a Clarkson employment centre in the area too, even though Clarkson is in Mississauga (Peel Region).http://thecentre.on.ca/jobseekers/co...ment-services/

Have to sign up (and mention what your job search goals are; centre will run your SIN into system to get verification about your employment or unemployment status) to get 1h online access daily for resume writing, jobsearching or software testing (Microsoft Office)-will receive a barcoded card to scan everytime you come into the centre. Workshops are offered as well, plus copier/printer (limit to a certain number of pages). Can do long distance faxing with staffer keying in access otherwise local faxing. Not like many Employment Ontario locations which usually restrict faxing to tollfree or local only numbers.
Employment services are free provided you are not working over 20h per week, otherwise skills testing (a booked afternoon with other applicants doing the same test) will be charged at market rates and so will other services cost you . Just an FYI. I have used the Burlington and Oakville locations-much prefer them over Hamilton resources (though Mohawk College Fennell campus has a smaller centre, it does not require scanning a card, just a dash for one of five computers to use resources).

Sheridan College has a Mississauga campus (named after Hazel McCallion) opposite the west entrance of Square One. University of Toronto has a Mississauga campus-both schools are not near Clarkson though. Just in case you might wish to use either campus for library or other services (good to know what is happening for talks, services, jobs, shopping, education, etc.).

There are some big box stores near Winston Churchill and Dundas? RCSS, DeSerres (art supplies), Fabricland and more. Not sure how much transit is offered. Seem to recall Mississauga Transit runs a bus from or near Clarkson GO, goes north on Winston Churchill and proceeds along Burnhamthorpe Rd W to South Common Mall. Oakville Transit has a local bus looping along Sheridan Gardens onto Winston churchill but it does not go to Oakville GO (I used to look for jobs at JF Fabrics on Sheridan Gardens-btw, JF Fabrics is looking for a CSR agent right now!-and did walk from the Ford plant parking lot to spend the day in Oakville downtown (library, The Centre and Oakville place plus checkout downtown Oakville shop windows while brother was on day shift. )

You and DH know that some GO trains on the Lakeshore West run express from Oakville GO to Union Station? Let me tell that Oakville platform is like sardine city-I used a few times when I got an early am lift from sibling on his way to work and had to get the train to Toronto. I mention this only because those express trains bypass Clarkson, Long Branch, Mimico, and Exhibition stations. Same thing happens in afternoon rush hour-some trains run express to Oakville GO then stop at every west station afterwards.

I'm certain Clarkson GO will have loads of free newspaper boxes for Employment News, Job Classifieds, 24hours, Metro News plus the paid papers. There is Applewood Mall? an older plaza visible from Clarkson GO. http://www.yellowpages.ca/locations/...+Village+Plaza

No idea what housing prices are like in Clarkson but you should be able to find older homes. If you venture near Square One, expect $1000 or more for renting an apt or condo. Burnhamhthorpe Rd is condo alley as is Hurontario but so many shopping options are in the SQ1 area.

The Oakville Library branch that used to be on Sheridan Gardens Drive moved to a survey north that is closer to the Ford Plant but there is a one way only westbound street exiting said area. Also the branch has limited days and hours of service.
@lilo0003 will be able to tell you about the nearby Mississauga Costco in Clarkson that is visible from the QEW.

I have to see if you could get from Guelph to Cooksville then take Oakville Transit to get to Winston Churchill? Is there a Guelph GO bus to Clarkson? I am not sure. There is no Guelph to McMaster U bus service as far as I know. If you could do that , then you'd be able to take the 407 bus from Mac to Station Gate, the GO bus station super stop north of Square One and eyeball the retail areas, educational institution, main branch of Mississauga Library, City Hall and the condo alleys. Highland Farms has a store north of Square One near Matheson.

Cool-there is a Guelph GO bus (route 29) that goes to the new MT Winston Churchill station. But the station is very north of the Ford Plant and the Clarkson area. Boo. http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/miw...sitwaystations

I can vouch for the speed of the MT transitway-it's like a dedicated LINC roadway for articulated express buses east-west in Mississauga. Think the HSR 10-Beeline bus without the Queenston Rd traffic! Pricey vending machines for bevvies, if the machines work. You'd have to buy fares at Square One Terminal or carry a roll of loonies for fares (don't try feeding $5 bills for $2.75 drinks-expensive way to make change as I found out in July).

Oakville Transit is raising its cash bus fare to $3.75 on Feb.1.

GO transit ditched the express to Oakville but loads of trains are express to Clarkson and the Lakeshore west line is always a smart idea because we have trains every half hour whereas other lines do not. There is a large condo within walking distance to Clarkson on Bromsgrove. Now that they have built the garage the parking is not so stupid. In Oakville we pay a greatly reduces bus fare if we are traveling to and from the Go train using presto, so in the winter that is always my 1st choice. I am not sure if Mississauga transit does the same. There is also a plaza south of there with a Metro and a Canadian Tire. We are north west of this area but I know it from my years of having the younger child in a day care by the Clarkson station so I could commute out of Clarkson. good luck finding a new home
