Ontario Lifts Financial Burden Off Families in Need with OHIP+
Province Helping Ontario Families Stay Healthy with Free Prescription Medication for Everyone Age 24 and Under
December 19, 2017 9:50 A.M.
Ontario is helping families afford the care they need to stay healthy by making prescription medications free for everyone age 24 and under.
Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, met with young mothers at Massey Centre in Toronto today, where he launched OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare. In just under two weeks, children and youth will be able to get their medications at no cost by simply showing their Ontario health card number and a prescription at a pharmacy. Coverage will be automatic, with no upfront costs.
Providing medication at no cost for children and youth will make a difference in the lives of Ontario families, including many vulnerable groups such as low-income families, large families, single parents with children, students, young people in the workforce, and unemployed and underemployed young people.
Starting January 1, more than 4,400 medications will be covered, such as asthma inhalers, drugs to treat depression, anxiety, epilepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, antibiotics, EpiPens (epinephrine auto-injectors), insulin, diabetes test strips, oral contraceptives, medications to treat some childhood cancers and other rare conditions, and many others.
Ontario is the first province to provide prescription medication coverage at no cost for children and youth age 24 years and under, which will make a real difference in the lives of people across the province.
Making it more affordable for families and young people to get the medications they need is part of Ontario's plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation. This thread is currently associated with: N/ALast edited by Shwa Girl; Sun, Jul 29th, 2018 at 02:08 PM.

It's good, but in my personal view, not as good as it could've been. I like the idea of the NDP's plan that they had where everyone gets some basic level of drug coverage. But something is better than nothing to cover Ontarions as a start

My only major complaint is that all the advertising for the program by a certain pharmacy chain seems to think only Moms need to know about the drug plan enhancement. Not aware of the Dads involved in their kids' lives?
I assume once the minors reach the age of majority (18 in Ontario), they don't have to tell Mom or Dad what medications they are getting unless of course there is some understanding between young adult and parents about how much medical information to share or if there is a power of attorney for healthcare involved if the young adult is attending post-secondary school away from home.2021-Bring on the sunshine, sweets & online shopping.

Many minors may be surprised to find out how it can be tricky to dispose of medical supplies if their local municipalities don't offer a collection service with the trash collection.

It would be nice for a basic level of payments for everyone. I think the Liberals are doing this for under 25 years since it is cheaper. Some seniors have more prescriptions than most under 25 year olds and this would be too expensive. Also there are more seniors in ON than under 25 year olds, at this time.
About disposing of unused meds, most pharmacies take most meds back. Any time. No questions asked

update, the new Ontario Conservative government will pay for prescriptions for those under 25, only if they do not have medical insurance coverage elsewhere.
