depends on what I'm in the mood for...

Need to feel like your world is ok compared to the screwed up (but totally plausible) mess of the future? Margaret Atwood-- no one does dystopia like Margaret Atwood.

Need to feel defeated and depressed? Thomas Hardy. Whew. Just saying "Jude the Obscure" brings tears to my eyes. *sniff* "because we are too menny."

I am a number one fan of the Can Con: Joseph Boyden, Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Matt Cohen, Anne Marie Macdonald etc. I love Canadian writers because I identify with the topics and the places. Except Robertson Davies. He drives me NUTS!!

I also enjoy many classics though I am fussy about the period of literature. Don't care terribly for Dickens (too moralistic) or the Bronte sisters (ugh. too long-winded) but I'm a real fan of the Modernist period. Gah. Maybe I just like reading things that are bleak. LOL.
