Can it wait a day or two? It will be best for you if you sign up within a group yourself, and then refer your friends yourself. That way you'll get BOTH the (up to) 9545 points for being a group member, AND 5000 points for each friend you refer who shops.

I have never earned that much in these groups, I believe I have only ever gotten 9500 points? Do you have to refer people in addition to your group for that to work? Anyone know?

yep, to get the entire 55,000 points you'd have to refer 10 people. or 9 if you're part of an SC group. i only referred one person last time, but that's much better than none. get all your friends to sign up with your referral link, even if they might not shop. you earn about $7 for any friends who do shop.

Actually to get 55,000 points you would have to refer 10. If you're a group member that doesn't use up any of your 10 referral spots. We don't participate in this though, because we're just occupied with spliting up points fairly. You're free to invite people on your own though (just not people who want to be in one of our groups), and by joining a group FIRST you could potentially get up to 4545 more than 55,000 if you factor in the group points. The people you refer outside the groups only get the 5000 for shopping unless you decide to share, though.
