We are starting daycare next week, I've been back to work since June, but was lucky enough to have grandma and grandpa help out over the summer.

It is $40.00 a day (it's a home day care).

    What are you paying?

Basically I'm going back to work to pay this, but I like my job, it's about keeping my senority and keeping my benefits (my husband doesn't have benefits)

Our daycare provider (I'm in the GTA) has a daycare set up in her basement.. every 2 wks it's $387.00 and my son is now almost 15 mths.

The things if daycare.... check all of them out 2, 3 or 4 times.. go with your gut! Some of the places I viisted while I was on mat leave.... I would NOT leave my son there no way!! You wouldn't belive it..

    For now I'm happy here..

    Good Luck!

We are in a daycare centre in Nova Scotia, and pay $693 a month (about $34 a day) for our three year old. That includes food and drink (we only had to supply diapers and wipes when he was still using those).

We pay that regardless of whether we're on vacation, if our son is sick, or not there for any other reason.

I babysit out of my home a few days a week and I charge $25/day and that includes snacks, drinks and lunches. Diapers and wipes are provided by the parents.

Where I work, at a non-profit daycare in Toronto, they charge infants $68.00 per day! It gets slightly less expensive the older the child gets, but not much. My son is on a waitlist for another daycare once my Mat. Leave ends, but I'm not sure how much they charge yet. Scared to think about it

Holy crap! How do people afford to go back to work after having a baby in TO? I thought that $700 a month was bad enough (and am always shocked when I think wow, we had an extra $700 a month in our budget before becoming parents).

I was looking at going back to school this fall, but the daycare would have over $1200/month for two kids. And they wouldn't even take my youngest until the middle of September when he is a year old. There is a two year waiting list here also, as there is only one daycare center in our area, and all the dayhomes are managed by the daycare people as well.
It would almost be cheaper for us to get a live-in nanny from the Philipines at $1500ish/month.

The highest I have seen for infant care in Toronto is $76.00 per day. That works out to $1520 for four weeks. CRAZY!!! I can't believe people are willing to pay that much and there is a massive waitlist too. The quality of care is pretty fantastic though.

I, too, look after kids, and I charge $25 a day for older kids, and $30 for younger ones - under 2.5 (they're just that much more work).

I looked into daycare in my area as well because I was going to go back to work, and it was just ridiculous, so I decided to start one for us parents who can't afford an arm and a leg to send their kids to daycare.

I charge $50/day, I look after a 2 year old, and I charge his parents regardless of whether or not they bring him. He's not allowed to come over if he's sick with something. My price includes two meals, snacks, sunscreen, all the outings we go on, etc.

I think some people are really shocked that they have to pay their sitter for their vacation time and sick days. The first year I didn't, but every time the family went on vacation (roughly 1 month out of the year), I found myself struggling to make ends meet. It's work I can't replace. If I were to give them a discount for those times, I'd have to charge them more the rest of the year. And since every family takes a different amount of vacation time, it would be impossible to then charge everyone the same rate.

IMO, unless your a well paid professional, it's not worth it to go back to work. Work clothes, gas to get there and back, the odd lunch out, and childcare make it very expensive to have a job.
