When I was in university, I had a summer job at a lab. One day I was about to pour a vial of a chemical down the drain (much milder than most commercial cleaners), when my coworker freaked. Apparently, the company would have been fined a huge amount if an official found out that the chemical had been dumped that way. I was surprised, since that is how it was disposed of at the university.
Bella, don't worry about it. Since the meds were old, chances are they had very little potency, so no harm done.

What is exactly do they do with toxic waste anyway? Is there a vault somewhere where we're storing it all so that it doesn't end up in a landfill?

Chemicals can be turn into something neutral... acid plus base= salt and water.
Or they recycling them.
Because of birth pill being throw away in water, fish have difficulties to have babies
Just for exemple.

Its sad to think about how much we pollute every single one of us , cleaning with baking soda is good though.

i'm sure a lot of you know the wonderful cleaning abilities of baking soda... but in case you don't
you can make a paste with baking soda and water and use it in place of any abrasive cleanser. it does the job and no SCRATCHES!
my mom used to use bleach in the mugs to remove tea and coffee stains! now she mixes up the baking soda paste and the stains come out easily.

One of my friends works for the city and she was assigned the task of calling pharmacies to ask how they disposed of their medications. There was an issue with the water tests and they were finding disturbing levels of medicinal chemicals in the treated water. This is after treatment at the wastewater plant so the current filters in place were not catching these chemicals. The city wasn't even aware they were present until then.
She was shocked to find out that the majority, in one of the largest cities in Canada, still flushed them down the drain. This was a few years ago, so it's still a recent practice.
I can totally believe Bella when she says most pharmacies are still doing it.

I'm sorry but I giggled. Don't put the fish on birth control!!

It doesn't seem like it's ever been a "problem" until not long ago. Like how eating 'regular' food has only started to be a problem because people are JUST now noticing they're overweight.
