Thread: Baby not gaining weight..

Alot of you may remember when I posted about my daughters possible c.f, which the doctors then thought was an allergy to cows milk instead. Well after a checkup with her pediatrician it was found she's still not gaining weight the way she is supposed to. They have increased her calories, but if it doesn't get better she needs more testing.
Does anyone have any experience with this with a new baby? Any ideas what it could be?This thread is currently associated with: N/A<3<3 My girls are my wold <3<3

Unfortunately I have no insight for you whatsoever. It must feel very nerve wracking for you and your family though. I remember when you first posted the thread awhile back about your baby's issues. I sure hope they figure things out soon. *hugs*

Its been hard. I mean honestly we all thought it was over and she was better cause initially when put on the Soy (which barely ever goes on sale btw and is hard to find coupons for haha). She gained and everything. But then we went to her checkup last month and everything was back the way it was before. Its nerve wracking for sure not knowing what the heck is going on with her.

Shes on soy formula at the moment because she has or they THINK she has a cows milk protein allergy. Thats why they originally thought she wasn't gaining weight. But since being switched she's stopped gaining again. So now they aren't sure whats going on at all.

I have been thinking about you lately! DD1 has her Celiac diagnosis. She is finally gaining weight now that she is gluten free. BUT, we are now seeing the pediatrician for DD2 who is 4 and half months old because she is not gaining.
I am only giving advice because you asked.
1) Consider your whole child not just weight. Is she an active baby? Lethargic? Seem healthy otherwise?
2) You know best mama, just like before. Trust your instincts.
3) I am still in this with you, just with a different baby. Prayers on there way and PM me any time.
With DD2 we are not worried like with DD1. We believe her to be long and lean and extremely active. She is more interested in the world than nursing. My family doctor wanted me to top her up with formula but I wasn't ready for that transition so we received a ped. referral instead. Now I am working on quiet and dark feeds (when I can, I have an 18 month old) and am pumping and topping up with syringe in the mornings if she is distracted.
It is VERY disheartening to feel you have worked your way to the top of a mountain only to find yourself in a valley again. We are there with you. You will get answers and it is okay feel disheartened and frustrated.Last edited by Granger; Sun, Jul 29th, 2012 at 10:26 PM.

I don't have experience with a babe that young. DS2 dropped off his growth curve at about 1 year old. He's gained about 2 pounds since then (he'll be 2 shortly). He's really skinny, but otherwise healthy. The doctors aren't concerned. I blame it on genetics...not mine of course

DS 2 was quite small and about 10th percentile for weight. He's managed to get up to 25th percentile at 4 years. It's hard to get him to eat much. If he's full, that's it. When he was very small we went through a terrible time figuring out formula for him. I had to stop bf at 3 months. Thankfully he never quit gaining, but stayed on the small growth curve. Doc was very happy when he finally gained a bit of weight.
LF: Chapman's ice cream and Dare coupons. DS has a peanut allergy so it's the ONLY ones we buy. Lots FT.

If the doctor finds that your baby isn't growing at a healthy rate, it's very important to find out why. Proper nutrition may help. for example if a bodybuilder do not have weight then he used to take some supplement to gain weight. so, in the same manner you can also give some extra nutrition so that it can gain some weight.

You should not worry, your baby foods have more energy and to eat more meals a day. Children should exercise for healthy child development. Wish you success.

I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter is still struggling. It's not at all the same in terms of magnitude, but after dealing with a very sick cat (possible inflammatory bowel disease or possible stomach cancer) for the past four weeks, I know how nerve wracking it is to know that there's something wrong, but for your LO to not be able to tell you what she's feeling.
I don't have personal experience with such a small baby, but one of my first thoughts is wondering if she is processing her food properly and getting all the nutrients out. If she seems happy and engaged, it isn't as likely that there is a deficiency, but nutrient deficiencies can be linked to low growth. This was a problem for my sister when we were young; she was always kind of thin and pale and didn't gain a lot of weight, but anemia and some nutrient deficiencies were found to be part of it.
Best wishes for everything to get sorted out for you and your baby!!

Must be tough on you, I wish you all the best, and to consult with the nearest physician to access the problem further. Sometimes a specialist can locate the problem far better than most "trained" doctors.
