Thread: Questions about decorating home

So I`m planning to basically renovate my entire house, starting with the living room.
It already has crown molding, the ceiling has been done (No popcorn thank god) Flooring needs to be done but that will be down the road
And then paint here and there.
However I`m looking to furnish everything brand new as well.
Couch(es), dining room set, media cabinet, I`ve seen a couple I like on sears and the brick but who else sells decent furniture? I want something that will last a long long time

I have always had good luck with Dufresne. Decent quality stuff for not outrageous money. I have had trouble with Reid's not warrantying their furniture ( the frame but not the fabric on a $3,000 sectional). The Brick well sometimes their stuff arrives broken and then you are stuck with the hassles with that. I just sent the whole diningroom back. (the edges of the table were dust when they opened the cardboard and the hutch was 2 different colors...etc.) All this happened after they "inspected" it. So all I can say is talk to people and find out where they had the best luck, and good luck to you. I hope it all goes well!!

For separate pieces i love Winners, but I have very eclectic taste and don't like things looking like a show room, I mix different styles and periods of furniture.

It all depends on your tastes, Candini. Are you in Ontario? Do you like lots of wood furniture? If you have bottomless pockets you can consider Mennonite furniture. I could never afford it because it's so very, very expensive but it's beautiful and built to last.

When we furnished our home, we bought from Mobilia and Structube.
We bought some from Ikea that I personalised with paint and by just changing the knobs.
There's also Dufresne. Never shopped there but from what I saw on the TV commercial, they have nice furniture.
HomeSense have some nice items too.Last edited by Jina; Fri, Mar 13th, 2015 at 09:57 AM.

I`m not particularly fond of winners/homesense, the odd thing but some of their furniture I often find is waaay overpriced for what it is and has damages.
Ikea, meh price is fine but some of the styles I dont like.
I`ll look into dufresne.

I love Gus Modern's selection, haven't bought there yet, but i do believe my next sofa will be from there. Good Scandi-modern inspiration there.
If you like more shiny, chrome-y modern then structube might be ok. they tend to carry a lot of the standard modern knockoffs you see in most stores these days. Personally I like knockoffs of modern pieces. It hurts when a single chair that was designed in the 1930'3 still sells for $3000+ for an authentic version :p
The Bay has had some interesting pieces lately as well.Last edited by anisa; Tue, Mar 17th, 2015 at 11:08 AM.

Like Go Jays I suggest the Mennonite furniture stores. The Bay and Stoney Creek Furniture(Hamilton) has nice furniture too.

I`ve heard that cotton doesn`t wear well on couches, is this true? Can anyone elaborate more on this? I`m not a fan of leather

I hate leather, you just cannot snuggle on it.
One piece of info you can ask for with regards to upholstery is the rub count. Basicly gives you an idea on how durable a fabric is in terms of normal wear.
