My Mom tried it for free and was happy and paid for a month (I think it was a month) only to discover once she paid no addition information was available on her searches and felt her money was wasted

I used it for awhile. They give you a month free I think, then you have an annual payment. It was interesting, but I kind of went in spurts, went between ignoring it and it taking over my life. I discontinued my subscription after the first year. There is a lot of useful information in it, but you also have to muck through some inaccurate info too (just like you would if you were muddling through paper archives, people spelling names differently, etc.).

My Mom has been doing some major geneology and has used it. However, I expect that if your family is from somewhere other than North America - Ancestry.com can be used as a jumping off spot to find out other reference ideas
