You start feeling really silly when your so oblivious to things. I love popcorn but i honestly didn't know you could just pop it in a pot. Here's me finding out how you can pop popcorn....

Did You know you could do it like that?
Is there other ways to pop popcorn?
I might as well throw this subject out there cause I thought it was pretty funny.
Popcorn forever!

Welcome to the boards!
My family didn't have a popcorn popper when I was growing up, and microwaves only came around in the early 80s I think, so we used to do it in a pot with a bit of oil all the time.
Now I have a popper for the microwave that I like because you don't have to add oil to it, and it's not so salty (or expensive!) as the little microwave bags. I got my first microwave popper 20 years ago, replaced it awhile back. Wish it were glass instead of plastic, glass ones are out there but expensive. I've read you can do it in a paper bag in the microwave, but I've also read that the bag can catch fire, so haven't done it that way.

Does the pot and oil method not as good? Like taste wise? Is the popcorn soggy from the oil?

Soggy, no, not at all! Tastes great. I just try to reduce the fat, and the work (yeah, we're lazy!). With the pot you keep the lid on so the popcorn doesn't fly everywhere, and you have to shake it around to keep it from burning and get all the kernels into the oil. You just put a thin layer of popcorn kernels on the bottom of the pot, doesn't need much oil either. As I recall there were fewer unpopped kernels using the pot method.

Oooo, I really love popcorn done in a pot on the stove, but sure don't do it often. It definitely tastes better! Mind you, you have to have the 'right' pot, and make it the 'right' way - for me that means putting it on high, start to shake when you hear the popping, turn the element off, keep shaking and shaking til it starts to blow off the lid, then hold it over the bowl til it stops popping, and flip them into the bowl.
Growing up, that's how we had popcorn made, til we got an electric popcorn popper in the '70s.
I usually use the hot air popper, but have a microwave popper as well.
Not a big fan of packaged microwave popcorn, but usually keep some around for 'emergencies'.

I use a medium sized non-stick pot - a cheapy kind. But it doesn't have to be a non-stick, not at all.
Keeping it shaking and taking it off the heat once it starts popping a lot will keep it from burning. The kernels in the oil stay hot so they keep popping when not even on the element.

I remember growing up my dad making popcorn on the stove with oil. I can still picture him in the kitchen shaking the pot. And we had a microwave for as long as I can remember but for a long time he still did it that way.
I have an air popper. I got a new one for Christmas as the old one died. I love air popper popcorn. No butter or salt. Just the popcorn. My kids love it too. We eat it as a snack all the time.
Never heard of a microwave popper. Only ever bought the bags for the microwave.

Love popcorn
Those who have hot air poppers, can you just buy the cheapest around or are some brands better than others?
