I would like to share my experience at a SDM this morning.
There was a girl in line before me buying bus tickets. Her total was 12.50. She gave the cashier $12 and then was taking out change for the 50 cents. Her change consisted of a few pennies. At this point the cashier says... "You aren't paying with that are you". The girl continued to take out the change. The cashier went on to serve me while she was doing that.
Now.... are the pennies not money??? Not like she was holding up the line or anything. Oh... and the cashier was out of bus tickets and was waiting for someone to bring them.... so actually the girl was waiting for the tickets.
Also, while serving me there was a bit of a problem with the pricing of one of the items that I was buying. So she called someone over to look at that. So I waited outside of the line so she could serve other people. When the guy came over to do the price check she referred to me as "little lady". I am really short in height but I don't think it was appropriate to call me "little lady". Growing up I have learned to ignore any comments on my height but I think this was just inappropriate.
I go to this SDM all the time and its always the same cashier. She is always rude... to all the customers. My husband tells me to complain about her but I have never done that. I always try and be polite to her thinking maybe one day she will feel guilty about being rude. I guess that's not working.

SDM is horrible from my experience. Sounds like the cashier was having a bad day and decided to take it out on the shoppers.

25 cents is the limit you can use before they can refuse it - every occasion you go in you should be sure to pay with 24 pennies on your bill! See how long HER patience lasts!

That's what I would do if it is a constant thing. Not only is it making the customer's unhappy but it is giving their location a bad rep.
PS: Here is a little interesting info about change from the Dept. of Justice
(2) A payment in coins referred to in subsection (1) is a legal tender for no more than the following amounts for the following denominations of coins:
(a) forty dollars if the denomination is two dollars or greater but does not exceed ten dollars;
(b) twenty-five dollars if the denomination is one dollar;
(c) ten dollars if the denomination is ten cents or greater but less than one dollar;
(d) five dollars if the denomination is five cents; and
(e) twenty-five cents if the denomination is one cent.

When a cashier is always rude you should complain,when someone is doing a great job and is pleasant all the time I go out of my way to praise them either to their supervisor or to their face,she's out of line and is giving the store a bad name.

I normally have no problem with people taking the time to dig out some coins. When I was a cashier though, it used to annoy me when people (OK, often old ladies) would glare at a person using debit in the express lane, then when it was her turn, say, "OH I have change for that!" and proceed to haul 99 pennies out of the bottom of her purse.

It looks like laurac86 has the scoop...so according to that...YOU COULD PAY with
24 pennies
99 nickles
99 dimes
24 loonies
19 toonies
(taking out one coin of each type just to make sure you are under the limit *wink*

This is an interesting thread!
I'd love to know what that cashier would think of the people who get on the bus and pay their fare in all nickles and pennies. I've done it before when I've been out of tickets.

I do that when I go on the bus sometimes, and I'll be putting coin after coin in the receptacle slowly counting it out and the bus driver will be looking at me, like oh my goodness just get on the bus and stops me and tells me that's okay. I guess he feels sorry for me, but is never rude.
