Honestly, check Kijiji. You'll find a lot of high quality stuff for cheap there.
Otherwise, even cheap brands like danby make microwaves in stainless. If I were you and wanted a brand new one, I'd start looking in flyers for back to school. Kinds in dorms and microwaves are like siamese twins. Can't have one without the other, if limited space and cooking must go hand in hand.

If you have a friend or family member who is handy, see if they can check if the fuse is blown. That's the first thing my husband checked when ours died, and it just needed a replacement.
Otherwise, pricing for a new one depends upon the kind/wattage you want. I must have at least 1000w to do stuff I like to in decent time, as well as around 1.0 cuft in size.
I've had two Kenmores and currently have a Sunbeam. I'd also consider LG, GE - not sure about some of the other brands like Danby, maybe others can give their experiences with other brands.
Bought an RCA once, it got returned within the week, it was crap.
I don't know where you are, but also check WalMart.
This one is a good price, on sale til tomorrow

Mine is a Panasonic stainless (1.1 cu ft?) from Costco. I think it was a little over $100. This one was actually a replacement; the old one stopped working after a year or so and I took it back and got a new one.
