I take vitamin C 4 times a day when i'm feeling a cold coming on. I also wash my hands alot, eat high vitamin foods, drink lots of tea, wash my gloves, coat and scaf often(many ppl over look these things), and keep my house clean, mostly anything that gets touched by people daily.

I do the usual, wash my hands a lot, avoid touching my face, eyes, nose.
But I also try to avoid busy places as much as possible, I know witht he holiday season and the cold weather everyone enjoys strolling the mall and grocery store and thats where all the germs get ya. If I HAVE to go to one of these places I go when it's the quietest.
Only caught one cold last year.

Dehumidifier. Make the air in your house hostile to viruses and bacteria.

Dave, we have to do the opposite here on the prairies - cool mist humidifier! We get -40s, it's a very dry cold!
You'd think the darned viruses would freeze, for gosh' sake!

Multivitamins seem work well for me for prevention. Zinc lozenges help reduce the symptoms if you take them as soon as you feel a cold coming on.
Someone mentioned ginger root, which is a natural antibiotic. Another good one is oregano oil, which you can get at a health food store. It's really strong but you can mix it with juice. Taking them regularly rather than just at the onset of a cold can help prevent them.
But SmackUTwice had the best advice. Excessive worry does affect your immune system.
