Any pet pychiatrists here? My rat terrier Mollie has gotten so neurotic the last few months she's driving me nutty. She's always been kind of clingy but now she stays under my feet even in the bathroom and then she'll try to go around behind the commode. She's taken to laying behind the couch and behind dh's recliner. When I sit on the stool she crawls into the center of the rungs and sits. She acts like your going to hit her whenever you get annoyed with her and she's never even been spanked. If you pick up the fly swatter she shakes and carries on like your gonna kill her. She's 9 years old and while she's been a little chicken most of her life she's never acted like this before but for the last few months she's been bizarre! She's such a little love and usually spends all day bugging me to play with her I realize she's getting older and doesn't have the stamina she used to but I want my dog back! I feel like a neurotic body snatcher has gotten her! Neither my dh nor I would ever abuse her and no one else is here to so I know she hasn't been abused by anyone. We love this dog with all our hearts she's our baby, I just don't get what has happened to her . Taking her to the vet soon as I get my check and see what he thinks and make sure it's nothing physical but would like to know how to reassure her she's safe. HELPPPPPPPP[/quote]
No I am not a vet, but this is my experience... I have raised 7 dogs (all at one time) right into old age. Most lived to 14, 15, and 16. If she is starting as if you were going to hit her, she is probably going blind. She can still see, but who is to say what she sees. The shaking too, is also part of old age. She is going behind chairs and cubbies becuase dogs are dening animals. They feel safe, They can only be attached from the one entrance. Watch that she can still find her food, eat and drink. One dog I had to get a shallow water dish for her. If you go to give her something by hand, watch your hand, she is not trying to hurt you but in time she will not be able to judge distance or necessarily see the difference between your hand and the treat. ... if you want to know more what old dogs go thru ... pm me. She and you can live a few more years together quite nicely, but you, not her, will have to make adjustments and be very very aware of her to keep her safe. Definitely take her to vet for a good senior check-up $$ . but worth it just to make sure there are no "underlying causes".
