as long as he isn't hurting himself (which I assume he would cry or stop if he did) and their don't appear to be any health problems I would say he's fine. All children explore differently and he could just be trying to understand the feeling he gets when he does this... plus their heads are always on something soft so the hard feeling is probably very new so he needs the time to work throught it and understand. Much like how children can watch the same tv show over and over again.. they get familiar with it and understand why something is happening

my DS did this all the time from when he was 2 to just after his 3rd birthday.i think it was his way of expressing anger or frustration when having a tantrum.i tried talking to him, calming him down,it never worked. i just gave him soft spots to do it on because i knew he was going to do it anyhow, such as a pillow or foam on his bedroom door.yes i had to put foam on his door.he would run to his room when told not to do something and bang his forehead on the door.eventually he just stopped using that as a way of expressing himself and now he just gets mad and goes in his bed.hopefully this worked out for you.if not try giving him something soft to do it on

Children with Autisim bang heads but from what you said about only after he got a cold.
Maybe he had ringing in the ears, feels like under water - fluid in the middle ear, maybe he had a headache too
Keep an eye out and be sure to get to the doctors if he continues to do!
