I can relate somewhat too. People who aren't into that stuff just don't get it. At least you know you can come here and talk to people who understand.

Wow. So not cool, especially at Christmas.

I don't understand that kind of attitude. I know a few people who I go to school with who actually refuse to buy things on sale because it apparently is embarrassing to them. This is one of the reasons the economy is the way it is... people NOT getting value out of their money.

This year my aunt jokingly said that my Christmas exchange gift last year was cheap. Needless to say, I was not happy. Since when was Christmas more about spending loads of money than the thought you put into your gift? I don't get why the people closest to us sometimes think that it's okay to tease us, as if we won't be the slightest bit hurt.

Anyways, keep your head up and enjoy your hard earned savings! Here's to another year of smart spending =D

people never cease to amaze me... but I agree on keeping a lid on the bragging, people who try to take advantage, or have nothing nice to say about your HOBBY dont deserve any of the advantages !

(I would rather donate to the womens shelter or the community services office and know that the things ARE appreciated, than to sit around listening to THAT!)

ALL SCer's(and there are MANY!) LOVE this stuff .... we are the ones who truly grasp that costs are rising, and take the time and care to be WISE with our $$....
are people who don't use coupons WISE with their money??
    In my opinion, THEY'RE not!

WTG for being a SMARTcanuck! =)
**I have recently moved, so please double check the addy before sending coupons! Thanks =)

You should take the gifts back and give them to a charity or someone else who will appreciate them and your generosity

I decided a long time ago not to share any good deals with my friends and co-workers because they act just like your family

You are so right, some people just don't get it. Shrug it off knowing that you are the smart one in the family and share all your wonderful brags here!

I do get annoyed when the same family members are cheap with us over and over again especially when we give their kids so much. They give us cheap gifts and whine through the year about how they have no money so that our parents feel sorry for them and give them more money only to turn around and find them buying flat screens tv's, elliptical machines, etc.

My point is that sometimes you get tired of the ones who are alaways cheap, to intentionally be greedy for themselves. Not saying that this is you, I'm just giving you a variation on the story.

Give us an idea of what you gave them and they gave you?

So sorry that you have to deal with derogatory remarks from your family. It's sad eh... how family can take whatever you do for granted.

I personally don't share too much about my freecycling ways, my coupon use, and my buying habits. Many people just don't get it.

I recall my manager giving me the weird look and say she doesn't shop at WalMart when she complimented on how pretty my maternity top was, and I told her that I paid $5 for it from the sale rack at WalMart.

And in the same way, I just don't get it on why anyone will want to spend $2k on a flat screen TV when you can wait for a sale and get it for $999? (Just an example. )

So, I say, let them have their comments and their mean spirits... Sooner or later, what goes around comes around. They will eventually have to pay for their thoughtlessness in some way or other.

Just continue doing what you love. Ultimately, what's most important is being true to yourself.

Don't let this take away the joy of saving!

I gave my family gift baskets this year, I couldn't afford presents so I filled them with freebies and cheap items that I got througout the year, I also added in some gift cards to that, beauty products that type of thing. I didn't tell them how much I spent on the items though, they seemed to be impressed with how nicely they were made and packaged, I took some time making them.

My bf also bought actual presents for a lot of my relatives as well, the gift baskets were more of a bonus. Christmas is a time with many people splurge on gifts, and only really do it once a year.

I guess it would help to know what you gave them and what they gave you. In my family, it's the kids (including me) that get a lot of the fancier gifts and the adults just pretty much buy for themselves and get what they want, so they are happy to get anything really.

Guineapig I know how you feel. I had a similar situation with my sisters. I gave them both a basket full of things that I had gotten good deals on, many of them even free. The total cost was maybe $15 out of pocket but it was worth about $80 regular price. One sister said thanks, I guess it's all useful stuff. But the other one looked at it and said what is this? All your free stuff you didn't want?

No Thank you or anything. The look on her face was like I had defecated in a basket and given it to her. (sorry) She acted like she gave me the best gift in the whole world (a mickey of vodka, and I don't drink very often maybe once or twice a year and a 500mL bottle of cranberry juice) But at least I had the decency to say thank you.

She didn't even get anything for her niece and nephew.
I am not working atm and did not qualify for EI for mat leave and can't afford to spend a lot of money on everyone. But next year I will spend NONE on her.
Amazon and Starbucks GiftCards for Searching the net? Yes I did and so can you!
