How to use coupons?

I grew up in a household where my parents believed that if everybody used coupons, the company would go out of business so why would you do that to a company that makes something you enjoy…

Well 25 yrs and a divorce later I find I need to find new ways to make a dollar stretch further.

I guess my question is what are the tips and tricks of using coupons? I’ve seen some posts that almost seem to suggest using multiple coupons on the same one product (quite possible that I misunderstood the post)
