There have been significant changes to the Native Act as of January 31 2011I just found out that I am now eligblle for full native status.
Because my grandma married a non native I wasn't allowed to get status. Had it been the opposite that I had a native grandpa married a non native I would of been allowed status.
Anyways now because of equality I am now eligible for Native status and all the full benefits.

Hopefully theres other sc'ers out there that are now eligible too! This thread is currently associated with: N/A

about time. I don't qualify, not even close, my grandmother is something like 1/4. I am just glad that they finally fixed this. I have friends who now qualify but didn't before.

Would somebody be able to qualify if they were half or a quarter native? I have a friend who was talking about this, but she doesn't know if she'd qualify.

That is great news Sally - Once you have your membership established, will you be able to register your children?

Yes, the Indian Act is a very old piece of legislation, it's needed changes for years.
Unfortunately many of the benefits (at least here in NS) only come to those who live on the reserve. For example, you can't purchase an item and not pay the taxes on it unless you have the item delivered to a reserve.

I am also trying to get this. As my Grandmother lost hers. This is awesome because both me and my sister were trying to go to university and were having trouble coming up with the money and now once we're accepted this will pay for some of our schooling.

It's funny how people thought back then, and how they all accepted that things should be different for a man than a woman. If you were a Native woman and married a non-Native man, you lost your status. But as a Native man, marrying a non-Native woman gave the woman status!
