Tonight I had to go out to do some last minute shopping for Easter. I decided to stop at Zehrs first to see if they had anything that was on sale that may not have been in the flyer and to get some coupons. I walked through and got some of the coupons for the Delissio Flat Bread Melts & I found some of the Egg Creations coupons. I also noticed that they had the Egg Creations for $1 which makes them FREE with the coupon. I didn't get any because I got a bunch when they were on sale the week before for $1.49. I walked down every aisle as sometimes Zehrs has those blowout sales that aren't listed and you never know what you might find. I then ended up buying baby wipes the No Name kind for $11.99 which was save $3. They come in handy for the car and when there's no water to wash your hands. I used the self check out and then left. As I stepped outside and somebody from behind me was yelling "Excuse me Loss Provention Officer" she asked me what I did with the frozen product that I had taken. I asked her what she was talking about and she said that she was told by an employee that they were 100% positive that I put something in my bag in the frozen food section. She even tried looking in my bag, I told her that I took some coupons for the new Delissio Melts but that coupons are free and provided by the manufactor at no cost to the store. She made a comment like yeah if your buying the product then. As she was talking to me I had noticed that a employee who I had seen inside at the self checkouts had come outside and was standing near us doing basically nothing but I guess being nosey. When I noticed her walking away I asked the Loss Provention Officer if it was her who said I took something. She said no it was someone else. She's like so you walked through the store up and down every aisle and only bought diaper wipes. Yes and some coupons I told her. It was quite embarassing as they were busy because it's Easter weekend. I asked her if the Manager was in as I was going to go in and talk to them since this is quite the accusation to make but she said they were really busy. She also mentioned how the store is losing money everyday from people stealing there.
I did end up calling and talking to the Assistant Manager and letting him know about this experience and he said he would talk to the person and apoligized.
I cannot believe this happened, like really here's a company (along with other's) that make's you pay for plastic bags to be enviromently friendly. Howeverthey have no problem printing hundreds and hundreds of coupons that have a very short expiry date and are all made specifally for their products, that will end up in the garbage. Don't dare use the coupons either because if you do you get dirty looks from the cashiers and the supervisors who have to do the over ride saying how they very rarely have to do the over ride because nobody usually uses that much in coupons.
I was going to call or email head office about this but since the Assistant Manager said he would talk to the person I'm not sure if I will. However I am still very pissed and don't feel very great about shopping there again. The whole front end cashier's have probably all stood around talking about me everytime I have went in and used coupons and have had to get an over ride.
I'm very disappointed in Zehrs and they really need to train their employee's better. Maybe if they did that then the store wouldn't be taking a loss everyday.
Sorry this is so long but I needed to vent. I haven't told Hubby about this as he probably wouldn't want to shop there ever again.

Geez I just don't get people nowadays!
I would prob email head office just to let them know that they have poor customer service and that people won't shop there if they are accused of stealing simply because they take a few coupons!
i wouldn't shop where people thought I was a thief, I would take my money elsewhereKeep it carbed......

wow thats awful that happened to you, i would talk to the manager or something , taking coupons is not a crime. wow its mind boggling

I'm thinking about calling Head Office to let them know. I was going to email them but then I probably wouldn't get a response. I am still in shock that this happened the sad thing is most of the coupons offered there are for their products. I thought about it afterwards and should have told her that I will shop at Zellers and price match anything I can from the Zehrs flyer where I can save an additional 10% of all my purchases plus still get the sale items offered at Zehrs.
But I didn't think of it until afterwards.

Wow. I'm so sorry this happened to you.
I would still email head office. Tell them you did talk to the assistant manager and got an apology but suggest that they need to retrain their staff about coupons and how coupons actually BRING people into the store and that ANYONE can take them. It does not say must be used at this location with purchase of specific item from this store. Coupons are free for the public, for customers. If someone can't take a few for later use what are they there for?
I would DEFINITELY go higher up, with still appreciating the fact that the assistant manager did apologize, but this is very serious. Those accusations are VERY serious and they also need to know what is stealing (ie: taking product) and what is SHOPPING (ie: buying wipes and finding coupons).
I would also let them know that unless ALL of their staff know it was an error on loss prevention staffs part, and you did NOTHING wrong, you will not be returning as a customer. Tell them how you feel they are going to stare and judge you and whisper behind your back - so you want them ALL to know you did nothing wrong.

Hi. I work at a department store. You cannot under any circumstances accuse someone of stealing unless you have 100% confirmation. This is why loss prevention stalks who they think is stealing. Because if they lose track of that person for even a second and they put down the item they were stealing and then left the store they haven't really stole anything. You could tuck something in your pants and walk around in the store for an hour but until you leave it is not called stealing.
So I am not sure what that loss prevention person was doing. Since he/she did not see you take anything they are not ALLOWED to ask you.
I would complain for sure higher up. There is some sort of something for this. You cannot accuse someone of stealing when they haven't. And saying sorry doesn't cut it. Because if that's all it took loss prevention could stand outside the store all day and say to each person"someone said you stole something. Did you?" Not very effective.
I work tonight. If the loss prevention people are on I will ask them what happens when you wrongly accuse someone.
Sorry this happened to you. I would have felt mortified too.

I'm going to call Head Office I think they are open Monday and let them know. Hopefuly they will step in and make sure this doesn't happen again to me or anybody else. I think they should let everybody know that it was an error and I did nothing wrong but who's to say they will actually do that. The front end cashiers have probably all talked about this and will continue to talk about it if I ever do shop there again. I do appreciate the assistant manager apoligizing but somewhere they are not training their employee's right and I agree it should be taken a lot higher up. For him to just say oh sorry that happened to you and he would talk to the person doesn't really mean much to me. This is way worse than having an employee argue with you about a coupon to use or being over charged for a product etc. I told my friend about this and he said if they were so sure about themselves they should have called the police right then and there. HaHa that would have been great! I would have gladly dumped my purse out for them along with my bag which had my coupon folder. I'm sure that officer would have been pissed for his time being wasted.

Holy crap, that's awful. I would definately find out if they have a regional supervisor or area supervisor and go above the store manager. Zehr's so desperately wants our business that they've changed the look of their stores to compete with Food Basics/Price Choppers but now they only want us to use their coupons. Only go to Zehr's for special items but do most of my shopping elsewhere, way cheaper.

I couldn't believe that comment really I didn't know it's illegal to walk through a store and only buy 1 thing. I should be able to walk though the store and buy nothing if I want.
I'd be really interested in hearing what happens if they wrongly accuse someone.
I even mentioned how Zehrs changed all their coupons to only be used at their store and that I couldn't believe that I was being accused of stealing a frozen food item. I hate how Zehrs took out all the games and pots and pans etc. to put the clothing into the stores. I bet Galen Weston would love to hear how you are now only allowed to shop in the aisles that only the item you came to buy is in!! They pay people $$ to make sure the store is step up so you have to travel up and down many aisles to get one or two items...Why do you think milk, produce, bread and meat are all on opposite ends of the store?!?!
If I were you this would end with 'I'm sorry' from the assistant store manager. Was this the Zehrs in Cambridge???

I decided to call the police department. I asked them if a loss prevention officer can stop you outside of a store and accuse you of stealing. When they didn't see anything put into your bags without paying for it. I'm shocked by the answer because yes they can. I was told they would then have to go back inside and look at video surveillance to prove it. I wonder if that officer was right.
