What about the students union?They should have a opinion on this so talk to one of them and share your concerns, they should be able to look into it and maybe get a resolution.

that is a good idea.. I am am member of the graduate student union rather than the undergraduate, so it is smaller and less powerful (Downright apathetic if you ask me, went to them with problems before and got a 'so what' kind of response)..But as we get more involved perhaps we will find a motivated undergrad who can get them involved with us

Does the University have some sort of ombudsman? Also check out the student newspaper as a sorce of voicing your displeasure.

I know the ACLU in the US was all over Disney when they introduced fingerprinting at its theme parks. Maybe there's a similar organization in Canada that would be interested in this?

OUR CASE ACCEPTANCE POLICY

Where no such agency exists, we offer practical information about ways in which the complainant may be able to resolve the

Second, even if the complaint raises a civil liberties issue, if another agency is equipped to handle the complaint, we normally refer the person to that agency.

Third, if a complaint does raise a civil liberties issue, we look to see whether it involves possible changes to a law or policy. If not, we usually refer the person to a legal advice service. Concentrating our efforts on addressing laws or policies allows us to maximize the effect of our limited resources. One notable exception to this guideline is providing assistance to members of the public regarding police complaints.

Finally, where considerable resources will be required to address the issue, we assess the likelihood of success of our efforts. If it is not likely that we will succeed in challenging the law or we would need to dedicate many resources to the issue, we are sometimes forced to reject the complaint.

while on the fingerprinting topic, Japan will be a place to avoid after Nov 20 for those adverse to this procedure....

Japan to fingerprint foreigners from next month

TOKYO (AFP) — Japan said Thursday it will start fingerprinting and photographing foreign visitors from next month under stringent new security measures that have been criticised by civil rights advocates.

The new measures, approved by parliament last year, are expected to take effect from November 20, a justice ministry official said.

All foreigners aged 16 or older will be photographed and electronically fingerprinted when they enter Japan, under a similar system to the one introduced by the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Unlike the US program, Canadians are *not* exempt from this one

grrrr!!! Was deciding between Japan or England/France after school as a grad present.. this will play a role in my decision...

I remember watching a show, maybe 20/20 or something a couple of years ago and it was showing ways that the Government was going to start tracking people in the future and one of the ways was: when you go to a bank machine, instead of using your bank card, your eye will be scanned as it said that our eyes are the same as our fingerprints where no two are identical and the other way is by installing chips in people and you will also be able to speak any language with the chip. So, basically, yes, i think fingerprinting is definately a way for the Government to track people.

There may be a few who would take this case probono just because it is something that would concern a lot of ppl

I have no reason to not have my prints taken..but I won't do it for a gym or school or such..

let's face it we have enough info about ourselves floating around out there on un-secure computers w/out having something like this out there too.
