We call rogers once in a while and tell that we are thinking of switching to bell and get savings all the time.

My credit cards have no annual rate, I would cancel them, but don't think I can because they have tons of debt on them

    What's "stick?

    1. Pay credit card (bring the balance down to zero). Use it as much as you can, but always maintain zero balance by the payment date (so NO interest is charged)
    2. Pay credit card & bills atleast 5 days before the payment date (it thats 5days for processing).
    3. Get a over-draft protection on your Chequing account, so there is no NSF Fee for over the account withdrawal.
    4. Get a line of credit from the whichever Bank you deal with (Unsecured line of credit is even better). This is equivalent to emergency cash, & use it only in emergency (you can pay interest only as minimum & the full outstanding balance if you have money). There is no charge if you keep paying interest only (which is much lower than credit card).
    5. Maintain a Spending Record, (as budgeting) to know, how much money comes, & where it goes. Attached you will find a Spending Record Fillable Form (link from my March 2010 News Letter).

It's amazing to see the savings right there on paper. I have no credit cards, no cable, and no landline phone. We have two cell phones, both with My 5 so we incur no long distance charges. We would have cell phones anyways, so makes sense to just use them. And our internet is cheaper then the other company, so we're good there. Now if I could just cut out my darn Tim Horton's coffee addiction, I'd be all set!

I never liked that show, "Til Debt Do Us Part". I found it really repetitive...people that didn't use money right (fees at the ATM, not paying bills on time...)

Yeah, that's true. But you have to admit, Gail is a finincial guru when it comes to helping these couples who are finincially doomed (and financially dumb). I have learned alot from watching her show, and we have opted for her "cash only" idea, and also have little jars to keep our cash seperated.

not necessarily. some premium visas include insurance coverages that could save you more than the cost of the annual fee.

I have Scotiabank Visa which has a 1% back on everything, and 2% back on recurring payments, drugstore, etc. I think I pay 68 dollars per year, but its so worth it. I also have CIBC dividends VISA - 1% back on everything - staggered at .25% up to $500, .5% from 501 to 2000 and 1% thereafter. No fees on that one (it was the Shoppers Drug Mart visa card before).

I buy coffee from the coffee pot at work for 0.25 cents a cup (as opposed to $1.50 or more down in the food court of our building) or better yet, boil the kettle and make my own coffee or tea. Usually eat packed lunches or cup o' soup as opposed to dropping $10 for lunch downstairs too.

Our weekness is that we like to have dinner and movie out about once a week or every two weeks, but I have lots of movie tickets from redeeming my HBC points and use the Entertainment book to eat out....

SPEND LESS - This is the only way one can save.
    There are essential things like:-
    1. Have a Spending Record (know where your money goes).
    2. Do not pay a fee for credit card if you maintain zero balance (there are several NO fee credit card).

    I like this quote-
"Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With
each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more
and more self-confident and more and more successful.”

So, on you CIBC dividend visa, for $500 purchase you save $1.25, & for $1000 purchase you save $3.75. If this amount is significant, than, why not drink less coffee at Tim Hortons (& make your own), you will save more money & health too.

I think the member already mentioned that he/she doesn't stop at the coffee shop to buy coffee, but rather makes it at home, or buys it for a quarter at cork...
