Thread: Irish Spring & Dogs
-
Sun, May 1st, 2011, 01:43 PM #1
I was wondering what you all think about using irish spring on dogs. Sparky has a LOT of hair (and dry skin! but not sensative) and no dog shampoo keeps its smell with him.

I got 12 bottles of irish spring the other day, with the sale at SDM, so I was wondering if it'd be a good idea? Obviously stay away from his eyes and all that good stuff, but do you think it'd work? I know irish spring keeps it's smell,

Do I sound insane?Previously CanadianBella... I'm baaack!

You shouldn't use a human shampoo or body wash on a dog.Don't worry about smell just keep the dog's coat clean and hair brushed.

You should never use human products on dogs. Dogs are meant to smell like dogs

His vet told me I could use the Lush products on him. but I didn't know about irish spring.

Shouldnt use human's soap on dogs fur and skin. Changes something about their PH balance which keeps them warm/cool.
They dont need to smell fresh like soap, but if the dog smells, there is talc made for animals to brush through their fur to take the stink off, when a bath isnt an option

I think people soap ruins the natural oils on a dogs skin and hair. Probably not a good idea. But I know what you mean about dog shampoo not keeping its smell. My dog loves to get dirty and the dirtier she is the happier! LOL

Yea, I'd advise against it, find something natural to clean your dog with, stay away from anything that will strip the natural oils out. Try to find something with all natural ingredients. Goodluck!

on one of the pet boards they said you can use human shampoo, that is what show dog handlers use. you would have to mix 5 parts water to 1 part shampoo and rinse well.

From what I understand, people shampoo can cause dry skin issues to get worse, so I would advise against it. Dishwashing liquid works well, if you don`t have any doggie shampoo (make sure you rinse well). I use horse shampoo on both Lily dog & Quincy cat (my hair`s weird from all my meds, so doesn`t work for me
). The horse shampoo keeps them clean for months & makes Lily`s coarse hair soft & fluffy.

i would go to your vet and ask him how often he recommends bathing the dog, once a week with human soap could definitely be the cause of the pups dry skin. Omega 3-6-9 supplements are what my vet recommended for my puppys skin irritation, and only bath when he REALLY needs one. regular brushing helps with natural oil production which is more benficial than almost anything else. If your dog doesnt like to be brushed due to long hair i'd get him clipped so its easier to maintain a proper routine. High quality food helps too, we feed performatrin ultra, costs us more to feed 2 80+ lb dogs than it does the kids lol but it's worth it.

He has to be washed once a week, vets orders and every online site says so for Pomeranians. He gets really oily because he has SO much fur, and he gets matted, so I have to bathe him once a week. (Brushes are useless and impossible, but I do use a human paddle brush after his bath)
I love the smell of that !! ThanksPreviously CanadianBella... I'm baaack!

I have a hard time finding good shampoo, and hey, if one made for dogs worked best then you better believe i'd be buying my shampoo in the pet isles.
