The town of Slave Lake, AB was virtually destroyed last night by wildfires. Almost 10,000 people have been evacuated with very little notice. People had lots of problems getting out though because of road closures. 100km/hr winds meant the fire kept jumping the highways. So far only minor injuries have been reported. People have evacuated to High Prairie, Athabasca, and Westlock, and Edmonton as road conditions permit. Last night they were recommending people gather on the beaches of the lake front and large parking lots because of the closures. High winds have prevented the use of air support to suppress the flames.

The northern Alberta communities of Loon Lake and Red Earth have also been evacuated, to Peace River. Large wildfires are also burning north of Fort McMurray, near Lac La Biche, and Fox Creek.

There are thousands of people affected by these wildfires, and they could use all the prayers and good thoughts you can send. Its taken a long time for the media to pick this story up. Please keep all those affected and all of the firefighters and equipment operators in your thoughts and prayers today.

I was horrified when I saw this on last night's news and can't begin to imagine how difficult this is for the residents of Slave Lake. I hope the province/country will rally around them and that we will all do what we can to ease the situation. Perhaps we will hear from the Red Cross today as to what involvement they might have.

This is so devastating for so many. My friend has family in SL and they have all been evacuated, sounds like the surrounding communities are all pitching in to help the evacuees.

i live 2 hours away, and there are fires all around my area.i am really scared that my town could have this happen as well.every year we worry about this in this area, but what i am doing today is taking some of my stockpile and donating it along with clothing and anything else i can.it is sad a whole town is just up in flames like that and they couldn't do anything via air due to the wind.people are voulunteering their firefighting abilities, opening up their homes to complete strangers and offering money and anything they can give.my problems in life seem like nothing compared to this.i take it into myself as a responsibility to pay it forward as i believe in karma...i am not a religious person but when i see people rallying together like this it gives me faith in humanity.

My facebook feed right now is full of people offering assistance to those affected. Welcoming complete strangers into their homes, going to help fight fires, and donating whatever they can to help.
This was so sudden and so immense, but the response has been incredible.

TudorChick, I hope you and your family stay safe.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread because I haven't seen mention of this in the news and I'm not sure why. I hope the best for all that live there it is just horrible, remembered in prayer of course.
