Hurricane Irma cuts a path of destruction through the Caribbean

Hurricane Irma has absolutely hammered a string of northeast Caribbean islands, killing nine people. Winds hit nearly 290 km/h, all but destroying every building on the island of Barbuda. Irma is now lashing Puerto Rico with heavy rain and powerful winds, leaving more than half the island without power. Meanwhile resident of Florida are in full-on preparation mode with fears Miami could be directly hit by the cat-5 hurricane, which is not expected to let up before it hits sometime on Sunday. Seven-thousand National Guard soldiers will be at the ready by tomorrow. Meanwhile there are 2 more hurricanes brewing up in the Atlantic after Irma get thru.

Election Act bribery trial begins

A trial starts today for two provincial Liberals accused of bribery under the election act. The accusations stem from a 2015 byelection. Then Liberal party CEO Pat Sorbara faces two charges, while Liberal fundraiser Gerry Lougheed faces one charge. Both are accused of offering would-be candidate Andrew Olivier a job to get him to step aside for Premier Kathleen Wynne's preferred candidate, then NDP MP Glenn Thibeault. Oh what a surprise.

del Potro upsets Federer at US Open again, sets up semifinal vs. Nadal

So much for the first US Open matchup between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Hours after Nadal did his part to get to the semifinals at Flushing Meadows, Federer was unable to join him for what would have been the most-anticipated showdown of the entire two weeks, losing to 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro on Wednesday night.
