Gravitational Waves Discovery Wins Nobel Prize!

The Nobel committee awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics to the three scientists who discovered gravitational waves.
Half of the prize will go to physicist Rainer Weiss of MIT,
with the other half split by physicists Barry Barish and Kip Thorne of Caltech.
The three scientists founded the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, (LIGO),
which first detected gravitational waves in 2015.
Gravitational waves are predicted by Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
When supermassive objects come together, like merging black holes, they create ripples in the structure of space-time.
LIGO's two observatories each have two arms 2.48 miles (4 kilometers) long and arranged in an "L" shape.
They use lasers to measure the changes in an arm's length caused by gravitational waves
flexing and squeezing space-time itself as they pass through the detector.
The first gravitational wave detected in 2015 was the result of a collision 1.3 billion years ago,
between two black holes that were 29 and 36 times more massive than the sun.
However, the effects are nearly imperceptible. LIGO's detectors are sensitive to differences 10,000 times smaller than an atomic nucleus, according to a description on the facility's website.

Marilou Danley, Las Vegas gunman’s girlfriend, returns to U.S.
The girlfriend of the Las Vegas gunman has arrived back in the U.S. Mary-Lou Danley was in the Philippines when the deadly shooting took place Sunday and Danley's sister believes the 64-year old shooter sent her away so that he could better carry out his gruesome attack.
She reportedly returned to the U.S. on Tuesday to clear her name of any connection to the shooting.
The shooter reportedly used Danley’s identification when he checked into the Mandalay Bay hotel. Authorities are also looking into a $100,000 money transfer that the gunman had made to the Philippines in the days before the attack took place.

Toronto Maple Leafs open NHL regular season play against Jets in Winnipeg
Some call it the best time of year! The puck drops on the NHL season tonight with a lot of buzz surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs, and for good reason.
The Leafs, who lost to the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference first round, got 304 points from nine rookies, including Auston Matthews, who scored 40 goals and won the Calder Trophy.
Matthews, Mitchell Marner, William Nylander, Connor Brown, Zach Hyman and Nikita Zaitsev are back for their second season and are a big part of Toronto’s core.
Blue Jays GM officially confirms Jose Bautista not coming back in 2018
The Blue Jays won’t be picking up the mutual option on Jose Bautista’s contract for 2018, but GM Ross Atkins wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the all-star slugger returning to Toronto in the future.
Atkins said Tuesday that he recently sat down with Bautista to tell him the option on the contract he signed before the 2017 season would not be picked up.
But while the team won’t be bringing back the 36-year-old right-fielder right now, Atkins said he was moved by the outpouring of fan support on Bautista’s final home game of the season and that moment will not be the last time Bautista is celebrated in Toronto.
