Environment Canada issues extreme cold warning
You will not want to spend any more time than you have to outdoors today. It is brutally cold. An extreme cold warning is in effect for the GTA. The wind chill is minus 34 right now and at its warmest today. Relief from the cold comes Sunday when a high is predicted to be minus 7.
We have broken a weather record for today, officially making it the coldest January 5th ever.
With the temperature plunging, the city has opened two new 24 hour warming centres for the homeless. One is at Metro Hall and the other at the Regent Park Community Centre. They'll stay open until the cold snap ends. City and federal officials meanwhile are still in talks to open the Moss Park armoury as a temporary respite centre.

HP Canada recalling certain batteries due to fire hazard
Health Canada says HP Canada is recalling 2600 lithium-ion batteries used in notebook computers and mobile workstations because they can overheat and cause a fire hazard. The recalled Chinese-made batteries were either sold already installed, or separately as replacements.
Consumers can go to the Health Canada website to see if their battery is affected. There have been eight reports of overheating batteries in the US and one reported injury.
