Council downsizing plan heads to court

All eyes will be on a Toronto courtroom today as a hearing is scheduled between the city and the province. The court will hear Toronto’s challenge to the provincial government's decision to cut council from 47 members down to 25. Toronto has argued the move violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, given the fact it was done in the middle of a municipal election. The premier maintains he doesn’t have to consult with municipalities because they’re “creatures of the legislature.” The legislation also cancels planned elections for the head of council position in the regional municipalities of Muskoka, Peel, York and Niagara - positions that would be appointed moving forward.

Yorkdale Mall evacuated after shots fired

The hunt continues for suspects following a mid-day shooting at Yorkdale Mall that sent shoppers into a panicked frenzy. Nobody was injured but police say two groups of men got into some kind of altercation just after 2:30pm yesterday before shots rang out. Multiple social media users posted that they were sheltering in stores after the shots were fired. The mall was forced to shut down for the investigation but is set to re-open its doors at 10am this morning.

Bouchard ousted by Vondrousova

Canada's Eugenie Bouchard is out of the U.S. Open. After rolling through three qualifying matches and posting an easy win in the first round, the Quebec native lost 6-4, 6-3 to Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the second round on Thursday. Bouchard hasn’t made it out of the second round of the US open since 2015.
