I agree with your training assessment - with one caveat, maybe the same one you didn't go into in your "in most cases" comment.

I believe you should train, train and train yet again "in the open" until you get it right and you can virtually do it with your eyes closed - and then train some more. But, at the end of it all, you still need to introduce live fire exercises. In my limited experience with shipboard damage control, I've seen far too many "dry-land" stars absolutely freeze when live fire was brought into the mix. I may not be the best, the fastest and certainly not the strongest, but I know I won't fold at the sight of flames. And that's more than I can say about those who were better, faster and stronger during simulated evolutions.

Argo I can't argue with your perspective, but I know that your military background is one where the resources to train train train were far greater than what is available to municipal fire departments. All of my fire friends with a CD, including our mutual friends, will tell you the same. My point is that the focus is too often on task level training, not command and decision making, and the limited time is not spent strategically or efficiently.

Just wanted to say thanks a bunch for your comments for the winning words, trivia and banter. Also thanks for your comments on my profile, reps and on this board on my son's performance. He was invited by Long and McQuade (where he takes his lessons) to perform this Saturday in Brampton at their Customer Appreciation Day. My son is looking forward to that, but I think it is also the free hot dogs and the bouncy castle that they will have there.

Oh. I think the penny has dropped.

Reading a fire and best management/deployment of suppression resources is a completely separate skill set from "good ladder technique". I simply assumed each area had as much focused training as the other. I'm sensing that's a terribly wrong assumption.
