My quitting of smoking, back in OCT/89, was due to having strep throat for a little over a week. I couldn't eat, talk or barely drink anything. warm tea & honey or soup broth is what I lived on. Needless to say, by the time I was feeling better, I didn't want to smoke any more & had lost 10lbs. Not quite the diet & quit smoking plan that is good for you, but it worked.

I'm glad you lost 10 lbs when you quit. I gained 35 lbs, and still haven't worked it off. In addition to quitting smoking, perhaps I should quit eating.

The origins of 'Warsaw' are to be found in a book called 'The Loneliest Man In The World', authored by Colonel Eugene K Bird, a gentleman originally part of the first American garrison at Spandau in 1945, and who later shared US directorship of the prison alongside his British, French and Soviet counterparts.
He became close friends with Hess and, totally against prison regulations but to his eternal credit, wrote a coldly factual account of Hess's life in Spandau, which would eventually cost Bird his military career when his superiors found out what he'd been up to.

'The Loneliest Man In The World' was initially published
in Britain in 1974 then reprinted as a paperback in 1976, when it became a 'best seller.'

The illustrated section includes mugshots of three prisoners taken in Nuremburg jail whilst awaiting trial: Albert Speer (number 31G-350031), Baldur von Shirach (31G-350085)
and Hess himself (31G-350125)
After his inevitable conviction, Hess was moved to Spandau where his allocated number was simply '7'.
