I just got back from Shoppers with my groceries. The total was $50.48 before coupons and taxes. After coupons, it was $40. To the cashier's amazement, I got 15x the points on the full $50! (I knew from reading Sc that this would happen )

My next stop was the electronics department. After my purchases today, I have 75,000 points and I was hoping to get a Nintendo DS for my son for his birthday. They had some in stock, but my husband is working Saturday morning and I would have to bring three young children by myself at 8am if I want to be sure to get one. So, I asked if I could buy it with my credit card today, return it Saturday and use my points to buy it again on Saturday. The head cashier told me this shouldn't be a problem. I'm very excited - hopefully I'll get $200 back on Saturday and still keep the DS!

Has anyone else tried something like this with success before?

I hope it works out for you, mind you shopper's return policy is full of grey areas. I was going to do a similar thing the night before a bonus redemption & I was told (by a cashier) that it could be hit or miss as their policy is to not accept returns on electronics.

Its funny my bill at SDM was almost the same, but when I got in the car I noticed I didn't get 15x the points. I called the shoppers line and the girl was really nice and she put the points on my account.

From what I understand, after today's purchases (DS included) you have enough points to redeem for $150 ($200 Sat/Sun).

Out of those 75,000 points you got approx 29,00 of them on the DS purchase alone. Without the DS purchase you would not have had enough to do the $200bonus redemption on the weekend.

You plan on returning the DS that you bought today and got bonus points for on Saturday and repurchasing it with points.

So you will get $199 plus taxes back in CASH/CREDIT CARD for the purchase. Then you want to repurchase it with points but those points are not yours to spend. They really belong to SDM because you returned the product that you purchased in order to give you enough points to be able to do the bonus redemption.

SDM has no way to claw back the bonus points you were given today because on Saturday you'll have already spent them when they actually were not yours to spend.

If I'm reading your post wrong and you had enough points to redeem before purchasing the DS then the only thing you have to worry about is if the cash manager holds true to his/her word.

I wondered about that myself but it said they only spent $40 and got 15x points. So I didn't think they were counting the points from the DS.

Last redemption I wanted a particular Tommy Hilfiger watch and the sales person said that I could buy it before the redemption then return it and they buy with points. I was able to do it without any problems.

That is in correct - I made sure to get the 75,000 points BEFORE I bought the DS. Then, I purchased the DS on a separate receipt WITHOUT using my Optimum card as to avoid any problems returning on Saturday. The cashier kept saying that I should use my card or take the 15% off but I had a feeing that would only cause problems on Saturday.
