Let me put it this way. It would have been nicer without the open bar.
Though it did make things interesting , I felt a little uncomfortable.
Luckily I had my cousin Alan to talk to. Nice guy, he is something of a cross between a yuppie, and a redneck.http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-...stRecentReview

I didnt dance really. My cousin, his wife and I went to another part of the synagogue to talk. I feel bad saying this but I was a bit embaressed of my extended family. So many cousins got drunk. One cousin was sluring her words and couldnt walk straight. Two people giving speeches ( not my relatives) were drunk during their speeches.
Also many people were wearing what I felt was innapropriate dresses. This was in an orthodox synagogue where the sephardic rabbinate of Toronto meets. I felt it was a bit sacriligeous that and the blaring of lady gaga music.
I think when I get married I will make sure there is only Jewish music and no open bar.
I realize most of my extended family isnt religious and maybe its just my orthodox upbringing but I felt a bit awkward.http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-...stRecentReview

Just saw this thread now....coming from a jewish background myself (who is close to your age gryphon) this type of wedding with open bar and dance music is all I have ever seen even when the wedding takes place within an orthodox synagogue. All the weddings had a mix of music both jewish and non jewish music and an open bar.
