Hello,
So I am planning my first shopping trip with coupons this weekend and we really need meat - hamburger, hotdogs, porkchops, steak etc - and I know there usually arent coupons available for this , I was wondering if there is any way I could get cheap - BUT GOOD - meat for less.
Oh I only have NF and WM to work with here. This thread is currently associated with: No Frills

Generally, the best bet is (if you can) to wait for some good sales and stock up, and never pay more for a certain kind of meat if you can help it.
For example, I will NEVER pay more than $1.99/lb for lean hamburger and boneless, skinless chicken breast. Ditto for pork chops and almost any kind of roast.

It happens rarely, but it does happen (which is why I stock up when it does). It also helps that I live (literally) right on the US border and can run over once a month. It's always that price and cheaper over there, and way better quality. Really makes me hate living in Canada!

I agree it's cheaper, but I disagree that US meat is of better quality. I try to avoid as much as I can buying it, cause couple of times I was really disapointed by quality and taste comparing to canadian meat. I'm talking about beef and pork.

I usually go early (like as soon as the store opens) for clearance meat. As long as its either used that day or frozen that day theyre good. At No Frills it's 30% off for the last day of sales. No frills by far is the best for last day of sale meats. You'll see them by the pink triangular stickers

Yes, we do that as much as we can too. So long as you bring them home and put them right in the freezer, you'll be fine. There's nothing wrong with them at all and we have gotten some great deals on meat this way.

In answer to the OP's question, just watch your flyers and sales. You'll see every week that something, somewhere is on sale. Make sure it's a good deal and stock up when you can. Eventually, you'll have a freezer full of meat and you'll only have to stock up every once in a while, or when you are running low on something. This is something I've been trying to drill into hubby's head for the longest time. Now that I've just taken over the grocery shopping, I can just do it myself.

$1.99 lb for boneless skinless. I think you mean skinless bone in. The cheapest I have ever seen is 2.99 for bneless skinless. But for bone in they are always around for $1.99.

I heard on the radio last week that the usda (I think that's what they are called) admitted to there being aresenic in the feed that the states feed to the chickens. I can't remember if I heard it on The Beat, or Virgin radio...one of those. Scary....you just never now what is in your meat.
I've never found chicken here for 2.99/pound....cheapes is like $5. Regular price I think is something crazy like $7/pound

Defiantly stock up when it's on sale!!! I like to buy the beef roast when they go on for 1.47-1.97lb and cut my own steaks and same with the pork loin roast and cut my own pork chops. I like to wait for the lean ground beef to go on for 1.49 and stock up on it as well. I agree if you can find the marked down meat buy it but watch the prices sometimes even though it is marked down it is still expensive I find. Happy hunting!!

You could also try finding a butcher shop, sometimes they have weekly specials and deals within their own stores!!

I have seen boneless skinless lots of times, however they are frozen and nasty, because they are sold frozen they soak the chicken in a seasoned water and the chicken will soak it up and when you cook it its half water and nasty so I don't recommend buying, I am not allowed because my husband would kill me. And they are allowed to do this because we looked into, at the time they were allowed to soak and add 33% more weight in water.(you pay buy weight so you pay for water).

I order in bulk from the butcher. My last order had 2 whole chickens, 2 roast beefs, 2 pork roasts (the kind with the bones frenched), 10 1lb packages of ground beef, 5 packages of pork chopes, 5 packages of bone-in chicken breasts, 5 packages of steak, 5 packages of sausages, 5 packages of chicken thighs... I can't remember if there was anything else, anyways I believe it was 75 lbs of meat for $150!
So I guess I'm saying that I agree to check out butcher shops, especially if you have a deep freezer.

The ground beef at Walmart is not good. I noticed the consistency was funny while frying it up and the family complained that the texture and flavour was odd, not that it was bad, just kinda of fake/mushy. I used it twice and both times was the same. Just a thought.
