I've been seeing these trees do their spectacular flowering each year and I still don't know what they are. What a nice way to dress up a dreary little back alley!

memorial day, began as a show of respect for union soldiers
in charleston, south carolina, 'freedmen', (freed slaves),
reinterred union soldiers, from a mass grave to individual ones
on a site that had been a confederate prison camp for union soldiers.
(washington race course, now hampton park).
on may 1, 1865, 10,000 mostly black people, (2,800 were children),
held the first 'decoration day' in that graveyard.
now memorial day includes paying respect to all who gave their lives
for their country.



so, it is a long weekend, donna, but it's a little south.
