Very sad case discovered last week in a rural home in southern SK, seven dogs were found to have fed on their owners - a man and woman who had died probably two to three weeks before that.
Now the SPCA has to decide whether to adopt out the dogs or not; there are five shelties and two mixed breeds. They apparently had been well looked after, but obviously had not been fed once the owners died.
Regarding the deaths, RCMP said there is no foul play - and, no, the dogs didn't do it.
The SPCA is having the dogs evaluated; apparently their behaviour since at the shelter has been normal.
After hearing dog experts speaking on this after the last few days, it seems to be a consensus that no rehabilitation will be needed for the dogs, they just did what came naturally because they were so hungry, and placing them in homes will pose no problems.
It's not true at all what some people are saying that now the dogs will have an appetite for humans... they simply did what they had to for survival.
So do you think the dogs should be euthanized, or adopted out? Debate on this is causing quite a stir here.
Yeah, there's a big 'ick' factor with this...

They did what they had to and what any animal even human would do to survive....if there ok now and acting normal I don't see why they shouldn't get a second chance in a good home.

Wow that is quite a sad case
Umm I'm mixed on this one as I'd like to think that they did what came natural to them to survive but they are also animals at the end of the day. You don't see homeless or hungry people feeding off of eachother to "do what they need to do to survive" ya know? I'd be for euthanizing them for the fact that it's now a complete gamble going forward and unfortunately if they were placed in a home and attacked the finger would be pointed to the SPCA for having not put them down to start with.

Yes you don't see homeless ppl feeding off each other that is bc they can get food somewhere else, they can ask for it, they can go through garbage cans...if your stuck in a room no way to get out and you have raw meat sitting there....er would you starve to death? The bodies were there for a few weeks it says, I am sure the dogs didn't go eat them the day they died....but prob once the bodies started to smell/decompose

"Some people aren't comfortable with that notion and some people see it for what it is: That these dogs simply did what was necessary to survive given the circumstances."
I agree which this statement. It's gross but they're animals and they were hungry.
I'm sure somebody will adopt these animals.

I have to agree with vee. Such a tragic story. I won't go and read it though. I'd say the dogs did pretty damn good waiting that long to eat them "shudders" Poor starving animals. Rip owners. I'd adopt one.

I read both links and the cause of death wasn't stated. Strange that two people would simultaneously die and there not be foul play involved. As for the dogs, I say they should be adopted out so long as the new owners are aware of their past.

Dave, no foul play would mean no one came by and murdered them. Must have been a murder/suicide, but they aren't saying that publically....

exactly Poirot, I was just about to post that.. people and animals must do what it takes to survive.. put the dogs in a loving home (with lots of food available
) and i think they'll be just fine

I still don't think I'd let the dogs anywhere near my children.

Adopted out. They were hungry. What else were they supposed to do?
I worked in a building where a lady had passed away in her suite. I didn't find her for 8 days because it wasn't uncommon for me not to see her for weeks at a time. She had a cat. The cat got hungry and had started feeding off her. Gross but it needed food.
