Consider this; there is really no conceivable possibility of the type of near-lightspeed or faster than light travel that our fiction allows us to imagine. We can debate that if you wish, but for now accept that as a condition of this argument. It follows, then, that the colonization of worlds outside of our system is sheer fancy. The extinction of life on Earth is an absolute certainty in the longest long term, i.e. when the sun burns out, and at least a statistical possibility within centuries or millenia (comets, asteroids, super volcanoes or our own dumbass selves). Therefore, the only practical way of ensuring the continuity of humanity is in the construction of multi-generational spacecraft. Think WALL-E, Starlost or something similar. Dyson spheres or a Ringworld would be so incredibly cool, but once again they go beyond the boundaries of any imaginable materials science.

So, if we need to build a Generation Ship, shouldn't we be getting on with it? It could be done with current technology, but would require a global effort and a large chunk of the world's resources.

Asked why he was planning to eat his cat, Navarro, Gary Korkuc reportedly told police it was because his pet had been “mean” to him.
Buffalo Police found Navarro inside Korkuc’s trunk during a traffic stop on Sunday night. They were drawn by the animal’s cries. Once they popped the lid, they found the four-year-old cat caged and “marinating” in a spicy broth of red peppers, chilies, salt and oil.
Korkuc, 51, adopted Navarro in May. Apparently, the couple didn’t click.
Though Navarro is a neutered male, Korkuc accused the cat of getting pregnant. He also told police and animal shelter workers that he wanted to get rid of the cat because it was “possessive, greedy and wasteful” as well as “mean.”
His apparent solution was to eliminate his unwanted housemate, and then get rid of the evidence. Cheaper than an acid bath, one supposes.
Police charged Korkuc with failing to stop at a stop sign and one charge of animal cruelty.
Shelter staff gave Navarro a couple of baths and described him as “purring away.”
On Tuesday, after dozens of inquiries, Narvarro was adopted by a local municipal worker. She has renamed him ‘Oliver’.

The original name he came with was Dieogi (proununced D.O.G.) but his last owner tried to change it to Tango. We'd like to change it but don't know what to change it to. Maybe something with gy or dy on the end to he reconizes it as him. "Georgy, Jordy, Odie" I dunno...
Any suggestions?

Maybe make a short-list of names you & the kids like & see what he responds to.

Lily's first name was Sheba, which she completely ignored when she came to live with me. The name didn't suit her - I associate Sheba with elegance, not a gangly pup who kept tripping over her own feet. One of my neighbours, who is a walking treat dispenser to all doggies, always calls her "Rotten Mutt". If I want to tease her, all I have to do is call out Rotten Mutt & she runs to the window to see if her pal is outside.

Lily was actually not the name I had wanted to call her, but my parents vetoed me (they didn't think a meanie from Greek mythology suited such a fun-loving girl). We were talking about various names & when my Mom suggested Lily, she ran over to us. I thought it was a coincidence, so I called out a bunch of names, then Lily. Lily was the only word she responded to, so she pretty much named herself.

Quincy was one of 4 names on my short-list & the only one he meowed at. So he pretty much named himself too. It's a good thing, cause at the time I thought he was a girl & one of the names was rather, um, feminine. Just think, he could've been a boy named Sue (or worse!).

BTW (because apparently inquiring minds want to know): Yes, daughter did have a good reason for canceling. When she called me, she was almost in tears. She was getting her passport information together to send to me so I could pass it along and she saw that her passport is set to expire tomorrow. Unfortunately, she's in an area where they don't have a local passport office so it would have been extremely difficult for her to get an expedited renewal. Guess it pays to keep the passport up-to-date; you never know when the traveling fairy will visit!!

Yonge and Sheppard appointments setup for the next day. Only need the passport if your flying. Could have still driven down. No?
