Expired on: Tue, Sep 6th, 2011Someone I know(I will not say her name(no it is not Melinda)) Is addicted to coupons. She regularly takes entire tear pad stacks and has started even opening products (purex 1$ coupon) to get the coupon out. She is now being charged with mistcheff and theft.
She is being charge by the loss prevention officers at Walmart. Most stores have these, people(aka security), but you many never even know they are there.
She was previously warned about taking coupons off products at walmart. Now she is in trouble for taking two complete tear pads.
It is highly unlikely that she will do time in jail, but it is guaranteed that she will have to do community hours. (Her lawyer says at least 100 hours.) On top of this she has to pay the lawyer fees.
So I thought I would look in to this. I talked to the Manager at Save on foods today. Apparently it is in almost every store policy that the tear pads are to be used for in store purchases only and only on the amount of products you are purchasing in that trip. Taking more that you are using in that shopping trip is considered theft. I have checked this with Walmart and Super store and SDM. They have all confirmed this. Taking extra tear pad coupons is THEFT and you can be charged. So be for warned, getting charged for stealing coupons, defiantly will get you beat up in jail. LOL

This is news to me, because I also know someone who is in the coupon loop, and was told that the coupons are NOT the property of the store, but are owned by a company called News Marketing and are paid by the manufacturers to have their coupons up in stores. This is strictly Smartsource in-store coupons I'm talking about. I don't condone taking entire tearpads, but I don't think someone would get charged with taking tearpad coupons.

most ridiculous thing I ever heard, must be more to it. There are always three sides to a story. Your side, my side and the right side...

Hmmm - brings to mind store employees who "get" or are "given" tear pads to take home. (and trade them)

I always feel like I"m stealing if I take a few coupons from the tearpads (I only take a few to give the next person a chance even though I don't buy that item) - now I'm going to feel extra paranoid and fear that I'll be charged. That's great :-(

I can see getting into trouble for opening packages, most if not all stores do have rules against this, but being charged with theft for taking coupons? Ridiculous IMO.

Expired. Wrong section and this is sillyness serves her right for opening packages and taking whole coupon pads.
Taking a few extra tearpad coupons will NOT get you charged with theft. I'd appreciate if you didn't keep misinforming our community. Thanks.Last edited by Sally888; Tue, Sep 6th, 2011 at 07:09 PM.

Agreed!
The rubbermaid nestea coupon i would consider stealing as the coupon was found in the product. But something sitting as a tearpad ? really ridiculous...
I honestly think your friend got caught for more then what she is saying. Something like this would really hit the media IMO and we'd all be hearing about it

this does not make any sense. Coupons have absolutely NO Value until they have been used towards the item. They are there for the taking, everyone knows that. Just like if you go into a public washroom and take a few extra paper towels with you, it is not theft. I always help myself to as many coupons as I desire, and i feel really good about it too. in my opinion this is just jibberish.
