Just saw on CBS news that Walmart U.S. will offer lay away for shoppers. They charge a small fee to set up but there is no huge credit card bill come January.

Walmart is smart - the know that some in the U.S. have a hard time with the job situation right now. So this is a way to keep those customer shopping.
Other U.S. stores doing lay away include:
KMart
Sears
TJ Maxx
Marshalls
Toys R Us
Wonder if the Canadian stores will follow Walmart's lead?Last edited by Shwa Girl; Mon, Sep 12th, 2011 at 08:42 PM.

I remember years ago Walmart Canada also offered layaway. As a teenager I bought a bunch of bedroom furnishings through layaway. I just put money down every paycheck (I was 16 so no credit card yet).
Great idea for companies to do that! Does any in Canada still offer layaway or is it a thing of the past? It's been a long since I've thought about it. lol.

I LOVE Walmart lay away... I wish they would bring it back! It makes it such a great way to purchase items when it's a bit of stretch to buy an item all at once.
WALMART: please bring back lay away!!

I'm pretty sure the Walmart at either South Common Mall or Square One (both in Mississauga) still offers layaway.

Wow, I haven't heard about lay-away in years - not since we had a K-Mart (yup, I'm old, lol!)

Most walmarts just didn't have the storage room for it. Plus the amount of people that were laying away 5 dollar items was insane. At least this is what someone who worked at layaway Walmart told me...

I remember 3 years ago I wanted to put a futon on layaway at walmart, but they told me they didn't have the storage room for big items. However I was able to put $300 worth of houseware items on layaway because they were small items... I loved lay away, that was always my moms foolproof way of hiding our xmas presents. hahaha.
I had n o idea that they stopped.
