I was reading in the BRAG forum, when I came across a comment that said that retailers aren't supposed to be charging tax on FPC(free product coupon). There is an official link here http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/guides/rst/511.html (might be a good idea to print off the part about FPCs and carry it with?)
This got me to thinking, is it the same here in BC? What about other provinces? I have googled and googled with no luck.Anyone know? Thanks in advance!

Safeway here is always really good with the fpcs and don't charge taxes but SD stands for sucks (well you decide but they aren't coupon friendly lets say - and neither is RCSS for that matter)

In NB, regardless of the wording on the coupon, taxes are to be charged according to the NB tax act.

The link is put in Archive so I dunno if it's still good, but we really shouldn't pay tax on FPC!

I've been using FPC in SDM and most of the time not having to pay tax, except for the STAYFREE FPC, I guess because it's GST only! If it's HST, then it will be free !

It does still apply, and in fact it now EXTENDS to b1g1F products as well. At least in Ontario. I came across an article on the CBC website about coupon usage and a woman from the government was quoted as saying that when the HST takes effect, consumers will no longer have to pay tax on the product they get free when they use a B1G1F coupon. As I mentioned in another thread, at a Zehrs and a Fortino's that I went to, THEY were the ones who informed me that tax was not to be charged. In fact at Zehrs the cashier had a binder containing a chart of every possible price that listed the HST beside it, so that they could easily find the amount of tax to be removed.

What a good topic to discuss. Back when iCoke.ca was still giving out FPCs when a certain value of icoke coins aka points were redeemed, I took them to Shoppers to get the drinks. 2 times, no taxes were charged but 1 time, the cashier did charge me the taxes. It seems to depend on the cashier but likely each provincial tax authority has something to say on the matter.

Here's the information from CRA itself:

A reimbursable coupon is treated as if it were cash. That is, GST/HST is charged on the full value of the product. Specific information pertaining to reimbursable coupons may be found here: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tp...brsbl-eng.html

FPCs and %-off coupons specifically reduce the selling price of the item. GST/HST should only be charged on the final price of the item. So, if you use an FPC, or B1G1, you should not be charged taxes on the free product: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tp...s/thr-eng.html

    Hope this helps...

You are so very welcome! I'd love for everyone to download a copy and present it to the cashiers when they redeem their coupons. It is our money after all!

CRA doesn't provide a pdf version of their entire information document so I've generated one from the website and have attached it here for you to download if you wish.
