i personally don't expect a thank you card on the common things (birthdays) but on the key milestone things yes.. i haven't gotten a thank you card in years (but i haven't been to a wedding or baby shower in years) but when we did ours we wrote them all out by hand and added in a photo.. personally i think they could at the very least sign each card personally shows they put some sort of effort even if it isn't a personalized note

I didn't get a thank you for a relative's wedding gift a few years ago. We're not close, so I've been scared to ask if they even got the gift that was ordered online from their registry. They could be thinking that I didn't give them anything, or the thank you note could have been lost in the Canada-Post-Apartment-Building-Multi-Postbox-Bermuda-Triangle.

I personally don't care, but I've never really been in a situation where someone who I would have gotten one from hadn't already thanked me in person, which I prefer. I feel like a thank you card is just a forced ritual. My mom never did them, but anything I received via mail for my birthday had a phone call, I think she tried thank you cards, but phone calls were the new norm by then anyways.
Each time I was a bridesmaid I got heartfelt thanks by the bride, the groom and the brides parents for being there on their special day and the role that I played, that was plenty enough for me.
Now, I did like receiving 'just thinking of you' cards while I was living abroad, they always put a smile on my face
