I've suggested the site TripAdvisor before...you can get all sorts of information about hotels and attractions. Read the reviews and narrow down your search to a few hotels, then ask on the New York forum for opinions. The reason I suggest asking for opinions rather than strictly picking by rating is that sometimes hotels solicit customers to give a favorable rating...the forum regulars will give you the lowdown. What I like about TA is that you can search the hotels and find listings of the amenities, including pictures of the rooms. When you narrow your search down to one or two hotels, then you can look at what packages are offered. You can get a good deal if you use Priceline or Hotwire, but you have to know about the risks too.
