Fifteen others escaped with minor injuries from the incident, which sent smoke billowing into the city sky.

NEW YORK Wed Mar 12, 2014 7:20pm EDT
...killing three people, injuring at least 36, and setting off a search for more victims feared trapped in the rubble, officials said.
Hundreds of firefighters were scouring the mounds of debris for survivors and trapped bodies. Two women were killed and the body of another person was found in the rubble late in the day, raising the death toll to three, a police spokesman said.
De Blasio said there were "a number" of people missing.
"This is a tragedy because there was no time to warn people ahead of time," de Blasio said. "We are expending every effort to locate each and every loved one."
Of those injured, one was in critical condition and most suffered cuts, broken bones and smoke inhalation, authorities said.

I wonder what the explosion was that caused all of this? I hope they find more alive in the rubble, vs the alternative.

It was a gas leak..
A rescue operation is continuing in New York after a gas leak triggered an explosion that demolished two buildings and killed at least seven people.
Firefighters are trying to find further victims trapped beneath the rubble of the apartment blocks in Harlem, with the death toll expected to rise.
A police spokesman said five people remained unaccounted for.
More than 60 people were injured after the devastating blast sent debris flying through the air on Wednesday.
