So, I've always had problems with my tonsils, probably for like 5 years now. I find myself every 2-3 months at a clinic because my tonsils become so enlarged. It's really annoying. Most times, it's not even a cold that triggers this. It's simply just my tonsils swelling up, no other issues. I've always had to go to the clinic & get antibiotics. (Which I always dread because those cause another problem for me, if ya get what I mean!) I've mentioned numerous times to doctors that perhaps it would be best to get them removed. I always just get the answer that oh no you're fine, you have tonsillitis, take these pills, you'll be fine. It's a never ending cycle.

So right now, I'm currently battling it. Woke up Tuesday AM with them swollen. This is by far the worst I've ever had it. I'm not eating or drinking, even a sip of water is super painful. Wednesday evening, I went to the clinic & the doctor checked them out. Said they were huge & she's never seen some so swollen. She took a swab, which is a strep test & actually first time someone has ever done that. And I was asked if it was offered to me, would I be interested in getting them out. I've heard it's an awful experience to go through as an adult, but the way I see it, I'm in severe pain as it is right now, if I go through this I will never have this again. She referred me to a ears nose throat specialist so I am hopeful that in the near future I will have them removed.

I'm in so much pain right now, everything is painful. I can't sleep. Swallowing a sip of water just to take antibiotics is painful. I've eaten nothing but popsicles & even that hurts. I have lost 5lbs since Monday.

Have any of you had them out as adults? Is it really bad, how was your recovery?

I went through horrible bouts of tonsillitis when I was a young adult, so many times that the doc said the 'next' time it happened, I would have to have them out. Now wouldn't you know, for some strange reason, I never got it again, and haven't had trouble since, don't know why...

If you are advised to get them out, just do it. Any form of surgery has risks, especially one where you have a general anaesthetic. Your quality of life will be better, than constantly being on antibiotics (which can create other problems).

As for you dealing with it now, you need to get some nutrition into you! Try nutrition drinks like ensure or boost maybe.

Swollen tonsils--I'm thinking you have a bigger issue like an allergy to something you eat/drink/inhale or you have some serious bacteria in you. http://www.ehow.com/how_5526243_cure...n-tonsils.html

Do you recall what you had eaten/drank the day before or day of the first swelling? Might there be a room condition i.e. mold that is triggering your tonsils?

My tonsils have not swollen to my knowledge but they get sore by certain things in the air, not just when I have a cold. It is likely I may be also developing a pollen sensitivity (was sneezing often but not constantly during the golden pollen released this June by the coniferous trees). Drinking cola drinks this spring/summer is also making my tonsils sore or fuzzy feeling (ears feel a tad weird inside too).

I had mine out when I was 6. Mine used to get so badly infected I could hardly breathe as a kid so they got to come out. It sucks but it's not too bad. I gave up and ate solid foods the second day after surgery because I was so hungry.
